Having never read any of the books, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. I'm surprised that the movie incorporates three books from the series as not much actually happens in the movie. I'm glad that Jim Carrey's part in the movie was actually not as extensive as the previews and hype made it seem. He's probably the worst part of the whole movie. I confess I'm not a Carrey fan, but the real star is Emily Browning as Violet. She had none of the smarm that too many child actors suffer from, and she was convincing as the unconventional and intelligent Violet. It's just unfortunate that the whole movie bobbed along without any real suspense or surprises.

As a children's film, I think Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is too dark, maybe even scary at some points. From an adult's point of view, the film looked like a Tim Burton movie, except it wasn't good. The visuals were great, but the story was severely lacking in many departments, not the least of which was plot and characters. I kept waiting for the movie's potential to pan out, but it never did. While the beginning and middle of the movie wasn't good, it wasn't too bad either. But the ending, oh the ending. The ending alone took a C grade movie to a D. I can't recommend Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, but if you watch it, do so with relatively low expectations. And as you watch it, know that it starts out decent, but only goes downhill.

The story of intelligent, charming, but unlucky siblings Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire and their adventures in the big city after a house-fire leaves them orphaned. When the children are sent to live with distant relative, Count Olaf, they realize that he has dastardly designs on the Baudelaire family fortune. The Baudelaire children are soon removed from Count Olaf's care and go to live with their Uncle Monty, a renowned snake expert. Things end badly after the arrival of a suspicious lab assistant named Stephano--Count Olaf in disguise. The children are then shuffled off to their fearful Aunt Josephine's. Sadly disaster ensues, due to the appearance of a mysterious peg-legged sailor--again Count Olaf, who then hatches his most dastardly plot of all.
Once again, I'm going to go against the popular opinion among movie critics in regards to this film. I didn't think it was that great. While Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, Jude Law as the narrator and Emily Browning as Violet Baudelaire gave stellar performances, I found that timing and the enviroments used in this movie to be very lacking. Instead of being amazed at how quickly the movie was over I was constantly checking my watch. It was an average movie.
The only concern some parents might have is with the darkness in this movie. You do not feel good at the end of this movie and some elements might be a little much for small children.

Somehow, they managed to make this uninteresting, or maybe even worse than uninteresting: bad. The kids are stockroom fluff, Carrey is uneven (is he playing the Grinch or the Mask or Danny Glover?), the script is tossed every which way so as to make it tremendously confusing, and the sound editing is muffled and inconsistent. It gets 3 stars, however, for some superb and beautiful Production Design (and flashes of cinematography brilliance.)
