Summary of Ein Leben lang kurze Hosen tragen
Based on the true story of German serial killer Jürgen Bartsch, THE CHILD I NEVER WAS (EIN LEBEN LANG KURZE HOSEN TRAGEN) offers no easy explanations for Bartsch's behavior. Framed by the confessions of the older Bartsch while in prison, the film flashes back to those moments when the teenaged Bartsch committed his crimes. While the first person perspective of a murderer could possibly alienate an audience, first-time director Kai Pieck condemns Bartsch's actions while simultaneously depicting the harsh world that might have spurred them: an emotionally cold family, an overbearing Christian upbringing, and a confused sexuality all play a part in motivating the chilling murders. THE CHILD I NEVER WAS is anchored by strong performances from Tobias Schenke as the elder Bartsch and Sebastian Urzendowsky as the killer's teenage self, helping the film win the award for Best First Feature at the San Francisco International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
