Lorna's Silence, 2008

"LORNA'S SILENCE" (not the most descriptive title for this film) combines good acting, gritty realism and a unusual story set in Belgium. Lorna is an Albanian immigrant who marries a local junkie so she can become a Belgian citizen; the plan is to divorce the addict and then, for money, marry a rich Russian who in turn wants Belgian citizenship. The money's to go for a snack bar she'll own with her lover. Complications ensue when her hard-boiled exterior softens as her conscience kicks in and she begins to sympathize with her husband-of-convenience, the addict who was paid to marry her. The film is a slice of life that reflects the hard realities and choices of immigrant life, and we come to care about Lorna and her fate.
