What an absolute treat this film is to experience! I've had this movie on my to-do list for quite sometime now and was so happy to find it was so much more than i could have ever expected. In these days we live in of superhero movies and endless remakes and sequels, it is rare that i'm blown away by the writing as well as the execution on a film these days. This film does it in spades! i can distinctly remember saying "wow!" out loud to myself numerous times throughout the film as i saw something unfolding that was far beyond what i had ever expected to see. I kept thinking to myself..."I cant believe i love this" "why didn't i think of this first?" So original, so heartfelt, and so honest! It would be a shame to miss out on this work of art solely based on preconceived notions or the fact that the leading lady is a
life-sized doll!

Lars And The Real Girl (2007) is a quirky odd almost want to laugh but shouldn't movie. It stars Ryan Gosling as Lars Lindstrom; a socially challenged and mentally delusional man that lives in his brother's garage. Lars hates to be touched in anyway and barely speaks because of his shyness.
He announces to his brother Gus (Paul Schneider) and his wife Karin (Emily Mortimer) that he has met someone over the internet. Bianca is from Brazil and is wheelchair bound. When she arrives they will all have diner to meet and get to know each other. Gus and Karin are astonished when they meet her - she is a full-size life-like doll that Lars ordered off the internet.
They have always known he was weird but this recent act makes them very concerned for him. They devise a way for him to get help while seemingly supporting him and Bianca. Soon the entire town is on it and is spending time with her, she even gets a job. Lars is deeply in love with her but can not live with her since she is very religious and will not move in with a man unless she is married. She stays in the main house with the brother and wife caring for her.
At work he finally meets a real girl (Margo) and they go out bowling while Bianca attends a school board meeting. They have a wonderful time together but Lars just wants to be friends as he will not cheat on Bianca.
I found the movie interesting and was thoroughly impressed with Ryan Gosling's role; he is proving to be one of the great actors of our time. I wish there was a little more to the film, once I began to connect with the characters (even the doll) the movie soon ended. Still worth a watch and there is no freaky stuff that goes on with the doll. It is a slower pace peculiar movie and may not be for everyone.

Theres so many ways that this film could have turned out bad. There are obvious jokes to be made from a situation like this and in different hands, Im sure that this is what would have happened. Fortunately, it happened to be these folks. Rather than looking down on or making fun of the protagonist, we feel sympathy for him. The movie never stoops to the expected raunchy material and instead infuses the film with a caring and compassionate heart. It uses the situation not for laughs but as a way to examine human relationships and how we ought to care for each other. I loved it both for what it was and for what it refused to be: a cheap joke.

Gosling is a genius. To make such an unlikely character come so true to life is really remarkable.
The kindness of all those around him is magical particularly that of his brother.

The rest of the cast are very very good and really turn a really strange story into something that's very sweet and heartfelt. In the day of sequels and remakes of trash, this one stands alone as something unique and different, and for that reason alone it deserves the credit its due. The ending too doesn't cop out and plays it as it should be.

Some liked it and gaveit three stars others like myself give it four stars. This quirky film that is more drama than comedy really hit me hard in the second half of the movie. The first half sets up the movie and many including myself find the townspeople who entertain Lars to be unrealistic but as the movie goes on the film takes a differnt turn in the last fourty minutes. It was only as the film was coming to end did I really enjoy Lars and the Real Girl. Some might find it ok and I understand but Ryan Gosling plays to part perfectly I got caught up in the storyline and as usual of late even got a little misty eyed. This is not the film you would expect to get you emotional but I admit it did get to me. While not really a comedy Lars and the Real Girl is movie worth checking out if the concept of the movie intrests you. Rent it and see something different than norm and see a man actully fall in love with a sex blow up doll.

If you think that a man and a life-size plastic doll is as deep as this movie goes, you are sadly mistaken. However, I can see people judging the book by its cover, and that would be easy to do. This movie is a true hidden gem. It is so emotional and uplifting - if you don't tear up at all, there is something seriously wrong with you. Emily Mortimer and Ryan Gosling both give the performances of their lives... they are tremendously underrated, and it makes me mad that they weren't awarded for their acting in Lars and the Real Girl. Watch this movie, and put your preconceptions aside for once.

"Lars and the Real Girl" is a unique film that'll make you wonder how a movie so non-commercial and outright bizarre could have been made. The story involves a young lonely man who orders a love doll (with which he's chaste!), a manikin that, he deludes himself, is his girlfriend. His brother, his co-workers, and his neighbors in the small, tight-knit community he lives in decide to go along with Lars's delusion, which his kindly doctor says will pass when he no longer needs the doll. That for me was the sticking point in the film -- I could believe that Lars might suffer the delusion but not that dozens of others (including strangers) would ever go along with it, let alone enthusiastically. But the film is well-acted and, in its way, quite touching.

I found it very charming. It gets extra points for being original. You never think you've seen this story before. Gosling, previously in "Half Nelson," shows he can play just about any kind of part.
