Land of the Lost, 2009

Maybe I was in a good mood heading to the theater. Maybe I wasn't as sick of Will Ferrell as I thought. At the end of Land of the Lost, I was almost embarrassed at how much – and how hard – I laughed. It is, of course, based on a mildly popular Saturday morning television program for kids. That wasn't exactly a comedy, but it wasn't a drama or anything. It just was a show to entertain kids. This won't entertain kids. In fact, writers Chris Henchy and Dennis McNicholas ignore current children and present a movie for young adults who remember the show. I think it was the right choice. Ferrell takes over the film as Dr. Rich Marshall, creating a scientist that is so obsessed with his own successes that he is socially and culturally inept. He builds a time warp machine that doesn't move forward or backward in time. Instead, it moves across time to a parallel universe that merges past, present and future together. The machine is lost as Marshall, Will (Danny McBride) and Holly (Anna Friel) travel across time to the Land of the Lost. There's all the cheese from the TV series, right down to the slow-moving Sleestacks. Marshall and his posse, which eventually includes a monkey-man, must find the time warp machine before a Sleestack king does. If the Sleestack gets it, all humanity will be lost. But don't get caught up in the plot. It doesn't really matter.Ferrell masters his craft in Land of the Lost and that is all you need to know. McBride is perfect in this role, instead of the leading man in Foot Fist Way. Combined, the two create laughably odd characters at opposite ends of the intelligence spectrum.Land of the Lost is so stupid it crosses over to the other side. I kept asking myself why I was laughing. My only answer was that Ferrell must be a genius, but I hesitate to declare it. tinyurl.com/r6b23b
