Didn't really get into it
I like a lot of things that others wouldn't, and a lot of my favourites are quite strange, but I didn't really like this one, I felt it was quite predictable most of the time, and the singing put me off, but to each their own I guess.

An Old Favorite
This was definitely an interesting mix of puppets and puzzles- one that I can better appreciate now that I'm older. But unlike some child movies of mine, it hasn't lost it's charm over time. David Bowie definitely added something special that would have been lost if it had been anyone else. And the interesting twists and turns of the labyrinth kept the plot interesting and fresh.

Cute movie. Jim Henson gives his Muppets(tm) a little more edge than Miss Piggy or Fozzie Bear had, but not too much. Jennifer Connelly may have more gravitas than her role deserves; she never seems as flighty as her character's dialogue requires. David Bowie is as weird as you'd expect him to be. The film has some nice imagery, and the 80's-era special effects (e.g., bluescreen) show up sometimes and are a minor distraction. Should be OK for all but the youngest children: even the most dangerous of the bad guys are comical puppets. Not a grownup type film; there's not really enough of a sense of menace or danger to give the story any forward momentum. A cute movie, but probably a step backwards from Henson's The Dark Crystal.

This is another movie that creates a complete world right down to the most irrelevant detail. Big surprise - it's a Jim Henson production. Every aspect is brilliantly thought out. (For example: Instead of the bad guys simply torturing a character by hitting him with sticks, they carry sticks with strange little varmints holding on to the end and the varmints bite him.) David Bowie not only steals the show, he also apparently stole Tina Turner's 1980s Wig. And most of her make-up. I think he was supposed to come off as mildly scary in his role as the PG-rated Goblin King. Unfortunately, he often comes off as completely creepy (especially in the scenes where he seems to yearn for the 15-year-old heroine. YUCK.) Yet at the same time he comes off as completely androgynous. Weird.

Just pure fun (and genuine thrills) from the get go, hearty belly-laughs, endearing creatures and inventive landscapes. My sister and I used to watch this movie constantly when we were kids and I still watch it a few times a year. It is fantasy that never grows old and a world you never grow sick of inhabiting. "It is so stimulating being your hat!"
