Summary of Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance
Titled from a Hopi Indian word meaning "life out of balance," this unusual, lyrical film suggests that humanity is an ugly blight on the face of this beautiful planet. An awesome epic undersold by an adjective like "powerful." Sequel: POWAQQATSI.

There's no "life IN balance" for the producers, except a life without humans. Well, I say, have at it. Warning: Humans may not go down without a fight.

An Awe Inspiring, Thought Provoking, Powerful, Breathtaking Masterpiece of Artistic Expression
This movie isn't for everyone but it goes far beyond a "Must See" for some people. I recommend it for free thinkers, artists, philosophers and dreamers alike.
Although it's difficult to call a movie due to it's lack of many conventional movie components, I would strongly recommend it to be watched and listened to by anyone with an open mind who is capable of letting go and going with the flow, who is ready to have an otherworldly experience bestowed upon them. I say "watched and listened to" because this movie gives me a strong impression that it's music is as much about the picture as the picture is about the music. I say "otherworldly" because the experience is just that, a very novel, alien, far out experience - despite the ironic fact that this very experience is provoked solely by depictions of the most relevant yet overlooked aspects of reality, humanity, this rock we call earth, everything that goes on on it - and nothing else.
Many viewers will derive one or more messages from this movie and it seems clear that it was made with an intended message but one very central factor of its greatness is that it is totally open to endless interpretation from any perspective and with the possibility of reaching an infinite diversity of conclusions. It merely provides an opportunity for intense extrospection, which may in turn bring about a deeply introspective mental state as well. The experience induced by this movie will leave you with some profound observations to say the least.
Trying to talk someone into watching this movie when they want to know what it's about is impossible. It's about nothing just as much as it's about everything and to simply describe in plain terms what one will see and hear in this movie will not do it justice because that is actually far from what it offers. Rather than its compilation of sights and sounds, the real meat and potatoes that this movie puts on your plate is a feast of thoughts and feelings. While you could describe the thoughts and feelings you personally get from this movie you cannot possibly predict those that others will get from it, so all in all you really have to watch it to have a faintest of clues what it's really all about.
However you are affected during or after watching this movie, rest assured you the affect will be as much a product of the movie itself as it is a product of who you are. Any movie will be interpreted and experienced somewhat differently by somewhat different people, some to a greater extent than others but I think this is far more true of Koyaanisqatsi than any other movie I have ever seen.
