The movie only ran 144-minutes, which isnt nearly long enough for an epic of this scale. Blooms character went from the proverbial rags to riches way too quickly. He went from not even knowing his father to being best friends far too quickly to be believed. He earned trust and gained stature in Jerusalem in no time at all. Within minutes of arriving, he was the kings go-to-guy. This breakneck pace left the narrative choppy and rushed, and that, in a nutshell, was the pictures biggest shortcoming.
I had my reservations about Bloom in the lead role, but he proved me quite wrong. Hes not the best actor, but after seeing him in Kingdom of Heaven I think he can hold his own. It helps that he was backed up by a top notch supporting cast, including Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleesan, Liam Neeson, David Thewlis, and Marton Csokas. Trust me, if you dont recognize these names, you definitely recognize the faces.
The direction and production values were amazing. The action sequences were jaw-dropping and presented with that flair that only Ridley Scott seems to possess. Jerusalem itself was beautiful and completely believable. I couldnt tell what was a full-scale set and what was CG, even though Im sure elements of both were used. The cinematography was great with some extraordinary use of colors against some very dark backgrounds.

I was eager to see this film, but it's very disappointing. First, Orlando Bloom cannot carry the role of mythic hero. He seems to wander around the frame, good to look at but entirely unbelievable as a mighty warrior. Second, the plot is preposterous; unaccountably our zooms from nobody blacksmith to whiz-bang military tactician and inspiring general. He's lucky, too; he just happens to come along at the most dramatic times - - there are lots of "lucky" plot coincindences. The movie shouldn't have tried to be an historical epic, a biography, a romance, an adventure story, and a special-effects extravaganza all at the same time, especially with someone as slight as Bloom in the lead. You'll spend most of your time watching your wristwatch and praying that the interminable (and interchageable) battle scenes end. I truly was stunned that this film was directed by the usually terrific Ridley Scott.
