A "must see" only for the superb acting by Michael Douglas. I did not know he had it in him! Otherwise the plot is thin and the story weak.

HERE IS A TOAST TO A GEM OF FILM THAT IS UNLIKE MOST FILMS OF 2007.
I ENJOYED THIS WEIRD TALE OF A FATHER AND DAUGHTER VERY MUCH BUT BE WARNED THAT THIS IS INDEED A BIZZARE FILM. King of California has a unique story line and Douglas and Wood are at there best. What makes this film quirky is the plot but the film was made with enough thought that you actually care for the characters. This is a very simple movie about a 16 year old who acts older than her age and a dad that is insane. The film takes you on a different journey that is not explored in popular films. I enjoyed the film the first 45 min. but as it unfolded I really go into the film and loved the fact that it was different than anything else I have seen yet it was not trying to be weird but instead was just trying to be unique. You might or might not like this film but it was not boring and was differnt than most films I have seen in 07.

King of California is a "cute" movie about a semi-delusional man and his only daughter. Douglas plays the father, who is on a quest to find a buried treasure somewhere in California. He's done plenty of research, and thinks he has the heart to pull it off. This movie is mostly a drama, with a few good laughs here and there. I think it has a good story, but it seems odd that there is mostly just two main characters, with a few other actors that barely get speaking parts. To me, the movie could have improved with more cast members to round out the story. Overall though, it was an enjoyable movie with a good runtime, and I was pleased with it.
