I must admit I am not a fan of Charlton Heston's acting but he overcame my bias in his first scene. I am impressed with his acting in this film. His English accent was a bit distracting but not enough to detract from this epic...

I must admit I am not a fan of Charlton Heston's acting but he overcame my bias in his first scene. I am impressed with his acting in this film. His English accent was a bit distracting but not enough to detract from this epic story. As many of the other reviewers have mentioned the music score, cinematography and the fact that actual people were used on location to create this film were not lost on this reviewer. These all added to the gravity of this based-on-true events movie. Unfortunately for us all we appear to be on the road to repeat history.

Interesting film...its almost a bit of an allegory for the current situation in Darfur, showing the perils of both intervention and non-intervention. I think Heston carries off Gordon pretty well, though I found it hard to sympathize with his character as much as the film wanted. This film is sort of weird because at times, it is quite accurate--Olivier gets the Arabic accent in English down nicely. Yet it is also glaringly inaccurate--the majority of the Sudanese are portrayed by white people (e.g. Olivier) in blackface! There also isnt a ton of action in this film. Still, you cant go too wrong with Heston, Olivier and the guy who played Gladstone, who carried himself well.
