You need Julia's background to understand the Julie part, and the Julie part is the main plot of the movie. The fact that the movie is based on two true stories makes it even better.

Should have been all about Julia...
The parts of the movie that focus on the Childs' life together are the only reason I gave this one a 'good' rating. I'm not sure why the filmmakers felt the need to splice the two stories together, as my understanding is that they come from two completely different books, especially considering the Julia Childs story could quite easily have stood on its own as a really delightful movie. It's like popping in a tape of a great, well-cast and acted movie to find that some obnoxious, self-obsessed crybaby yuppie has taped over whole sections of it with her therapy sessions. There is nothing relatable about the Julie character, and I agree with the previous review that says her fixation on Julia Childs is unhealthy and a little creepy. I also don't understand what was supposed to be so innovative or compelling about her blog project (spending a year cooking every recipe in Julia's ground-breaking cookbook? Didn't Julia and her collaborators do all the creative work there?), nor how it 'saved' her from all of her seeming non-problems.
Long story short, I would really have enjoyed this one had it only been about the Childs'- these are two really charming people who appear to have been deeply in love with one another and have led a genuinely interesting life together, not to mention Streep is SPOT ON as Julia. If you're going to watch this one, do yourself a favor and just fast-forward through to those parts.

There are two movies here and one of them should not have been made. I would love to see Streep and Tucci revise their roles in a full length movie about Paul and Julia Child.

I normally dont review but I feel that you must be warned! This movie is grating. I love blogging and food and cooking and cook books and cute movies but this was not any of that!
This is a movie about a girl being obsessed (in a sick way) with someone else and somehow this is a light-hearted movie! They try to tackle serious issues but it is just plain silly. There is absolutely no ending other than more creepiness.
And even if you do enjoy the movie, you will surely begin to feel that it just drags on a bit too much.

8/10Great
Another triumph for Meryl Streep, "JULIE & JULIA" melds two similar stories that span generations. Julie is a late-twenties woman who's beginning to feel like a failure; the earlier promise of a writing talent and success back in college is beginning to fade after years of mindless clerical work in cubicle-land and a dumpy apartment above a pizzeria in Queens. But she loves to cook and her husband encourages her to begin a blog about cooking; she decides to prepare every meal in Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in one year and write about it. In the process, she finds her voice and her future. The other story concerns the real-life Julia Child, who was also a late bloomer: she didn't marry until 40 and first started to learn French cooking in Paris years later. The film is very well acted, more funny than you'd expect, and far more romantic -- both women were a handful, but they could rely on partners who supported their kitchen obsessions when the rest of the world did not. I enjoyed this film way more than I expected. In addition to a director's narrative, the DVD contains an interesting "making of" that's about a half-hour.

Only why did it have too be so long, like really watching two movies? It could have been 1/2 an hour shorter. Both stories are equally good, both actresses are doing a good job, especially Meryl Streep (one can't avoid imitating her once the movie is over). It is a gilrs' movie, but not a classic one, and I'm sure men will enjoy it, like I have.

I went on Sunday to go see it with my Fiancee. While it was more of a "Let the girl pick out the movie to see" it was surprisingly a good movie. From the of the story you can see how Julia Child was a very unconventional Women of that period. While women were doing bridge and she was doing something that has always been done predominantly by men. One aspect that very interesting was her interaction with other family members especially with having a ultra-conservative father didn't approve of any of the choices she's made.
Tucci's role as Paul Child was excellent especially with his side story on how he lived during the McCarthy years during the 50's. The role also showed how Child's interaction with her husband was not a normal occurance during the 40's and 50's since it was more of "What's for dinner honey?" or "You should stay home and take care of the kids."
As for Julie Powell's role I was surprised to see Amy Adams doing that role. At first I barley recognized her. The one role that was very memorable was her trying to cook a lobster in the pot (The song went great with the scene).
All in all 4 out of 5 stars.
