Another triumph for Meryl Streep, "JULIE & JULIA" melds two similar stories that span generations. Julie is a late-twenties woman who's beginning to feel like a failure; the earlier promise of a writing talent and success back in college is beginning to fade after years of mindless clerical work in cubicle-land and a dumpy apartment above a pizzeria in Queens. But she loves to cook and her husband encourages her to begin a blog about cooking; she decides to prepare every meal in Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in one year and write about it. In the process, she finds her voice and her future. The other story concerns the real-life Julia Child, who was also a late bloomer: she didn't marry until 40 and first started to learn French cooking in Paris years later. The film is very well acted, more funny than you'd expect, and far more romantic -- both women were a handful, but they could rely on partners who supported their kitchen obsessions when the rest of the world did not. I enjoyed this film way more than I expected. In addition to a director's narrative, the DVD contains an interesting "making of" that's about a half-hour.
