Banal filmmaking at its finest, this one is. I honestly believe that, had this film been done in English and starring Nicole Kidman or someone, it would have been panned by many of the same critics that are extolling it now. I also do not understand the veritable apotheosizing of the KST. Sure, she did a fine job... I guess. But her performance - brilliant or not - is wasted on such a vapid character. The problem, I feel, is that the filmmaker tries to capture the sense of isolation that the protagonist endures by keeping her at arms length from even the viewer. We are never granted so much as the smallest window into the protagonists consciousness, and the exterior persona we do encounter is insufferable at best. So as a result of all this distancing, the viewer becomes unable to identify with her, and therefore unable to generate the empathy that the crux of this character-driven narrative rests upon. And furthermore, once I figured out the twist of this movie (which I did within the first twenty minutes or so), the film became an all together unrewarding journey. Don't get me wrong, it's not a terrible movie, I just don't get all these over-the-top praises of - what is essentially - a run of the mill 'Law and Order' episode. But in my opinion, good acting alone does not make up for what is a seriously flawed, boring, and improbable, yet predictable script. But it looks like I am alone on this one.

Wow. What a brilliant movie. Tight, wonderful writing, fabulous acting, brilliant storytelling that starts with a seed and blossoms into a tree over the course of the movie. I love the way the story starts small and tight, immediately plaguing you with questions because so little is known about the characters in the first scene other than the fact that they're in an extremely uncomfortable situation. The great craft is how the author adds, bit by bit, scene by scene, little nuggets and clues as to the characters' relationship and history, so that you're absolutely hooked wanting to know more. By the time it's all revealed, you marvel at their story and the beauty of how each woman flowers in the company of the other. Terrific directing also. 5 stars all around.
