Into the Wild, 2007
This is the ultimate escape story, escape from your life that is. The main character feels unhappy with his life for various reasons that become clear as the story progresses. So he decides to go for total freedom and he disappears. He doesn't take any possessions and he starts travelling in search of freedom and wisdom.
He soon decides that Alaska is where he eventually wants to go to live all alone in the wild. The motivations behind his travels are explored through the narration of his sister and through the encounters with the people he meets on his travels.
This film succeeds in telling a story without really showing everything. The characters are explored through their actions, not through their dialogue. It has been a while since I saw a film as moving and profound as this one.

Into The Wild (2007) is a personal journey of self discovery. It is based on the true events of Christopher McCandless life. Emile Hirsch plays Christopher (a.k.a. Alexander Supertramp); a well-off college graduate with a strong will that leaves his life behind to set off on a trip to Alaska where he wishes to live free from society and his overpowering parents. He donates the majority of his savings to a charity, destroys his personal documents and identification then packs a backpack and jumps in his car.
On his travels across the country he meets many remarkable people that touch his soul. His zest for life is invigorating and infects the people he meets. Early in the trip is car is destroyed in a flood and he must hitch-hike the rest of the way. A taste of his trip includes kayaking down the Colorado River and meeting an interesting couple, a job as a farmer, selling items for some other free spirits, a girl, and spending time with a lonely old man.
He concludes his circuit and arrives for the Alaskan adventure of a lifetime living off the land in a magic place. Has he found peace in his life? His incredible journey will be engrained in my mind forever. One day I hope to visit Alaska, although not quite in the same manner.
At almost two and a half hours long keep the snacks and refreshments near by; but dont drink to much as you will not want to miss a single moment of this film.

This is not a review, but a warning. DO NOT READ NE+FLIX's "iffy for 15+ (more)" link. It contains MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS.
Ne+flix did not have to do that. It is possible to provide parental advice information on a film without spoilers.

This movie would probably have been a lot better for me if everyone hadn't told me he died at the end.

I was amazed this was a true story and was inspired to learn more about the protaganist. If that's not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is. Now how the hell did that bus get there?

The combination of unique and memorable characters, epic story telling, unthinkable circumstances, beautiful scenery and outstanding folk music soundtrack by Eddie Vedder make this a movie that is truly worth experiencing.
Into the Wild is a retelling of a true story based on the last years of a young man's life and his spiritual journey to find himself. That man is Chris Mccandless. Shortly after graduating from Emory University in 1990 Mccandless abandoned his family, his upper-middle class background and all his material possessions. He donated his entire life savings to charity and destroyed all his personal identification. Then he set out into the world with only the clothes he had on his back.
The film follows Mccandless for those two years as he traveled all over the US and into Mexico. Along this journey you are exposed to all the beautiful, natural landscapes and the deep relationships developed with the wide variety of people who he meets along the way.
Mccandless ultimate goal is to remove himself from society completely and journey alone into the wilderness of Alaska. This idea was partly inspired by his favorite author Jack London who wrote "White Fang" and "The Call of the Wild". He sees this as his final path to his true freedom and spiritual awakening.
The fiilm does a great job of jumping between his time in Alaska and flashbacks two years earlier as he traveled across the US. This avoids a scenario like the movie "Castaway" were there is little to no dialog for long periods of time. There is never a dull moment in Into the Wild. When it is all over you will be left with mixed emotions and possibly reflecting on the current state of your own life.

I recommend you see this movie but BE WARNED because this is a hit or miss type of film. What I mean by that is you enjoyment of this film will depend on your mood at the moment and if you like films that wander a bit and are mostly about characters. I try and see both sides and why some love or hate a certain movie. Some films I feel most will enjoy, some few will and others are 50/50 (a hit or miss type of film) and Into the Wild is the 50/50 type of film. I found it to be an emotional film about a young guy who might or might not be a little insane and who is on a mission. That mission is never explained but on his journey he meets some amazing people and grows as a person. Others could argue that he was a spoiled rich kid who was selfish and got in over his head going on a cross country trip and living in the wild. Both are valid points and you have to see the film to make your own decision. For the record I enjoyed the films Sean Penn has directed. Films like The Indian Runner, The Crossing Guard and The Pledge where flawed at times but original and I have always come back to think about them long after I see them and eventually re-watch his movies. So I hope this was of help and remember if you choose to see this just sit back and get the vibe of when you were younger with little money and walking around with nowhere to go but just happy being outside. This film captures that feeling and draws a blinding spotlight on one's man soul searching trek into the unknown. Hope you enjoy the journey and I can honestly say that few films are like Into the Wild.
