Insomnia, 1997

I appreciated this film more after I watched it and reconsidered my emotions. The most amazing thing about this film, which is about a man wracked by insomnia both because of his far-northern location and a lingering sense of guilt, is how the director makes the viewer feel wracked by a sense of dread as well--both through camerawork and the indescribable aura of the film. Skarsgard gives a typically strong performance as the lead; you can almost see his condition degenerate over the course of the film. The story itself is intense and twisty enough, with a frighteningly creepy villain, to keep you hooked. Oh, and if you speak Swedish or Norwegian (I don't), it seems that there is an interesting linguistic subtext to the movie since Skarsgard is Swedish whereas most of the actors are Norwegian. At times this film can be a bit draggy, but in terms of making the viewer feel the same emotions as the lead character, it is one of the most effective I've seen and I can recommend it without reservation.
