Inside, 2007

After putting this movie off for a couple of years, I was nervous about watching this because of the subject matter. I am a huge fan of Martyrs and Frontier(s), but a French horror/thriller/gore flick about a pregnant lady being terrorized seemed like too much. Also, I consider Martyrs the best horror/thriller of all time and could not get that film out of my head for weeks. I am so glad I actually gave this film a chance, because I think I liked it better than both of the aforementioned titles. This flick is so believable and well acted, I was actually nervous the entire time I watched it. The ending is hard to watch but was not as bad as I had anticipated. Definitely check this out if you are a fan of the above titles. Like Martyrs, this will stay with me for a long time.

Undoubtedly the most horrifying film I've ever seen. This film isn't scary in the sense of an oh-my-god, he's-behind-the-door slasher movie, but it made me so consistently uncomfortable in a way that most horror films aspire to do but can't. There is something stomach-churning about watching a woman fight to protect her as-yet unknown and extremely vulnerable fetus. The almost-smoky aesthetic of the film is perfect for the sense of horror. The violence is BRUTAL; if you are at all squeamish, you will not make it through this movie with eyes open. I can't think of any films I've seen that were bloodier, let alone arthouse-y, foreign films like this one. This film completely gripped me like few do anymore. It is an amazing film for this genre and one I intend to watch again, but it is so legitimately horrifying and unnerving that I can recommend it only to a certain audience.
