Inkheart, 2008

I have NOT read the book, so I went into this totally without expectation. After watching it, it felt like something clearly was lost in the translation. The acting isn't bad, in fact most of it is pretty good and yet I wasn't fulfilled. The story starts with Fraser playing a father who won't read stories any longer - because his very reading brings those characters or events to real life. Needless to say, that could be a bad thing - and sounds like a pretty interesting story. You're pretty quickly introduced to Dustfinger (Bettany does a great job) and he seems magical and interesting and potentially menacing. However, for me, the story really lost all its magic soon thereafter. There's some running around and then we meet the villains - who don't seem particularly menacing or evil, nor are they really all that interesting. Serkis has played some great characters - but for me he didn't seem like something to be feared in this. Perhaps that's because it's aimed squarely at children and not to scare them - or perhaps that's the way it was in the book. Either way, it became some running around and then meeting the moronic author of the Inkheart book near the end. "Oh... you must have your father's skill too!!" he blurts out to the theoretical villans - sure. It's likely a good watch for children, but as an adult it lacked the magic it should have.
