Well...not everything Werner Herzog makes turns to gold, apparently. Yes, going into the film, I knew it was a mockumentary (I don't typically like mockumentaries), and I knew it would be tongue in cheek, and I knew it wouldn't be a FUNNY mockumentary. I just didn't expect it to have nothing to say, and to be about nothing, really, at all. It doesn't even really qualify as a "satire" because it's never sure what it's satirizing; a satire, after all, needs a subject. The one interesting part of the film is the chance to see Herzog being light-hearted and a normal human being, as opposed to the larger-than-life mythos that has built up around him. If you've seen every thing else by Herzog, you might as well watch this, if for no other reason, just to watch the director being in front of the camera.

This fake documentary is intriguing and amusing. Werner Herzog, the well-known director, didn't direct but he co-wrote. Herzog is an eccentric man who always has something interesting to say. He is known for his courage and the risks he takes: in some of his movies he takes his crew to exotic locations that are difficult to access (even dangerous in some cases) in order to get beautiful shots. In this film he explores the myth of the Loch Ness monster and as always gets his crew into trouble. The script was co-written by Zak Penn who also directed. It's his directorial debut and it's nicely done, I found it very entertaining. (Penn did an even funnier movie in 2007 called The Grand - an improv comedy with an all-star cast - hilarious.) Two brilliant people combine here: Penn and Herzog. And the result is wonderful.
