Butterfly effect
This movie has a pretty complicated idea, nesting of realities, it's kinda easy to understand once you get it, but if you don't you may find it boring. If you do, like me, you'll find this movie one of the best movie ever.

This film start with a very good idea (I don't want to to spoil what it is, even if you probably already know) and is well developed in the first half, but then it try to go to a level of complexity that it failed to handle. With the plot a little messed up, second half of the film is just action. It left me with same sensation matrix left me the first time i saw it: a good idea for a very good sci-fi movie, but badly exploited, so it ends being just an action movie. Difference is that action scenes in matrix left a mark in the story of cinema (thousand of citations in every kind of movie), action scenes in Inception have nothing special in my opinion.

Inception
Inception is a film that seems to get lost within-within-within itself. Beginning with the premise that individuals can infiltrate the subconscious of another and plant or extract ideas within the subconscious, the film lacks a focus and devolves over the course of its long running time. While many of the possible interpretations for the film may be interesting, the film’s inability to maintain more thematic unity is a weakness that is a result of the excessive intricacies that seem to exist solely for their own sake. Many questions are raised throughout the film: Is it all a dream? What is a dream relative to our absolute perception and reality? How real can our collective perception be? These questions exist in Inception but exist as Dom Cobb’s totem as the film ends; there are no answers. This film may seek to label itself as profound in its complexities but ends up losing any meaning it might have within its own world (within a dream). The film offers spectacular visuals but lacks any significant meaning to raise itself beyond that to a higher art form.

A poweful change in pace
Great acting, mind blowing story (if you're not a stick up the ass, realist prick that can't give out side of the box a chance), stunning visual effects. Bang.

As a fan of Nolan and most of the cast I found Inception extremely disappointing. It has an interesting plot with fantastic effects and choreography but it seems to pander to the lowest common denominator. It explains itself over and over to the point that I was silently screaming I KNOW ALREADY! It seemed like at least a third of the film was DiCaprio telling you what you already know in superfluous soliloquies. In that sense, I can see why its being compared to The Matrix; it treats its audience like morons. Im beginning to think that most people are. I keep hearing that this film is so complicated it defies description and requires your full attention for comprehension, some are even suggesting that you have to see it more than once. I dont have a problem suspending disbelief but everything about this film felt false to me, even within the context of the fictional world that it creates. There are some major continuity issues and there is absolutely no chemistry between the cast members. Also, all of the actors seemed completely out of place and most of them gave less than mediocre performances. Cillian Murphy gave the only performance I found believable. Ellen Page as a businesswoman? Joseph Gordon-Levitt firing a machine gun? Come on! There was a lot of effort put into this film and it is chock full of great ideas but it just didnt work for me.

Chris Nolan is becoming a legend. This film takes a very complex idea and simplifies it to a degree that makes it understandable and although you notice the holes in the idea you let him off because you know it's done to make the film entertaining; and that it is. Add Hans Zimmer to it and the atmosphere is incredible. One of my all time favourites.

Mind bending? Try mind numbing. Director Christopher Nolan keeps suggesting in interviews that to properly appreciate "Inception" it should be seen twice. Well, that sounds like a man who has some serious points on the back end, but along with not wanting to fork over double the money, I don't wanna have to sit through it again. It felt like "dream engineering" school with the first hour and a half consisting largely of glossary terms. Finally, at one point, Juno blurts out something like "Hey, wait a minute, who's dream are we in exactly?" At the theater I saw this in everyone let out a little laugh with that. Yeah, Juno, who's dream ARE we in? It was cathartic and was the first signal that Nolan had any self awareness of what he was putting his audience through. Look, there are a half a dozen dreamers, and three different levels of dream consciousness. Or is it four? Does that come out to 25 to 30 different dreams? Do I multiply the number of dreamers times the number of levels...and then..umm.. divide by the speed of the van? Why does this movie feel like a word problem? I didn't think I'd need a number 2 pencil. To Nolan's credit, a lot of the threads converge and this movie seemed to make some kind of sense by the end. DiCaprio's backstory clears up anyway. But I don't want to have to sit through it again to absorb every detail because great sections of it are as cinematic as an algebra class. I rewatch good movies to relive the experience of seeing them the first time, often picking up on things I didn't catch the first time. I DO NOT watch movies twice to make up for their narrative abstruseness. This movie is just too complicated. It just is. It wasn't too deep or complex for my little brain- I can hear the fanboy complaints already. (I think a second viewing would actually expose how synthetic it's psychology is.) It's too complicated, like a 3D sudoku. Two stars is too low, three stars too high. Two and a half.
