In the Company of Men, 1997
This is a revenge story about men taking their revenge on a woman. The lead character's were hurt by the women they love and are now looking to completely destroy an innocent deaf woman.
This film is very dark and not at all what you expect to find in the comedy section. It is slow paced, with many long scenes, and has only very few jokes.
I think the film was written this way to give it a realistic feel despite the unusual cruelty that is shown by the lead characters.
While I can respect this I do feel this causes the film not to live up to it's full potential. The story could be either funnier or more cruel, but instead the choice is made for realism, but in the end I think that is where it fails.
It might be the 1990's setting, or the unusual cruelty, but to me the film didn't feel realistic to me. So I think it could have been a masterpiece, if the realism had been traded in for a more intense and funnier story.

The sordid and sadistic premise put me off this for over ten years, but on a whim I gave it a chance in view of some recent conversations about human relationships. It is a little tough to watch at first, knowing the narrative line, but you are likely to be swept up by the beautiful Aaron Eckhart performance---"meat, gristle, venom" (as he describes someone else's interior at one point---a woman, actually, believe it or not---but no doubt he was thinking of himself really). Of course it is also one of the scariest sociopathic personalities ever displayed but Eckhart does a high wire act on that combination of audacity and arrogance that, in a handsome businessman, ironically comes close to being the envied masculine ideal for some. The victim is also a bit more complicated than you might have expected, and well acted. It is a little less nauseating than it sounds, because the byplay is so clever and disarming, but it is a bold, clean-cutting swipe at a lot of comfortable aspects of life. Ultimately satisfying as both entertainment and food for thought, despite serious moral qualms and conflicts. And the Oscar-worthy Eckhart is mind-blowing. 9.09

Very dialogue heavy and packed with irony while providing a disturbing glimpse into the lives of ordinary people. I was very surprised by this movie. Loved it

Yeah, OK. I agree that all movies don't have to be happy and focus on good or heroic people, but this movie is just odious. Words cannot express how much I hate it. The fact that it's about people I would give the time of day to in real life, and then I paid money to watch same people during my free time irks me, I'll admit, but that's not why I hate it. My problem is that this movie is too Hollywood. Yes, boys, it's too Hollywood. Surprise, surprise. The plot is that these guys decide to humiliate a woman. They want to pick a lonely woman who doesn't get much attention from men, shower her with attention, and then both dump her at once. Fair enough, but anyone else notice that the woman that they choose is drop-dead gorgeous? God forbid they should actually pick the frumpy overweight type that they appeared to be talking about when they hatched this plan. Then all the men watching the movie might have to watch a movie about an ugly fat girl, and who wants to see that? The movie tries to get away with this by having this gorgeous woman be a deaf-mute, and while I agree that lots of men would turn away from her for this, I know plenty of men who can sign. We can debatee that last point, but guess what? They made the woman a deaf-mute so that they could get away with using a pretty thin actress in the movie rather than an ugly fat one. The second problem that I have with this movie is the "surprise" ending that is supposed to make Aaron Ekhardt's character all the more vile. That is just ridiculous. I can't say much more without introducing a major spoiler, but those of you who have already seen the movie, you ask yourselves: does it really matter? Do you really think less of Aaron Eckhardt's character after the surprise is revealed? Myself, I found that I couldn't possibly think less of him than I already did.
