self-indulgent. I love Dylan but this movie is a bore. And Christian Bale seemed more like W. Bush.

If you are a student of Dylan, this film is a great study. If not, it will only seem like a drug induced dream. It's like an inside joke, great if you "get it"...but awkward if you don't.

A fine example of film as art, this prismatic examination of the lives & times of Bob Dylan is not for the casual viewer. The more you know about Dylan's life, the more you will appreciate this film. Full of great performances, notably the late Heath Ledger and Cate Blanchett, this is a good one to watch on a Sunday afternoon when you don't have to be anywhere for awhile.

10/10Must See
More "Finnegans Wake" than "Across the Universe," Todd Haynes semiotic anti-biopic of the elusive cultural artifact known as Bob Dylan is a fragmentary illumination of, not the man, but the notion. The deep-seated Dylanology that Haynes saturates his film in makes it impossible for the uninitiated to enjoy. The film rambles with the incandescent, poetic grace of a Dylan song, constantly mixing metaphors and mosaic sequences to a degree of near-equivocation. The film alludes to the known events, perceived legends, and lyrical interpretations of Dylan's work and transposes them into a unique cinematic language. One cannot discern the aptitude of Hayne's film until theyve: 1) become aware of several key phases in his life, and 2) accepted the entitys genius. The entity whose abstract lyrics can be read and heard as great poetry; that deconstructed the conception of celebrity in the form of cubist rearrangement; that can alter his voice from a nasally whine to a baritone's croon; that epitomized genres, and then promptly left them.
If you dont understand the significance or genius of Dylan thats fine, just make sure you realize that you couldnt possibly understand Im Not There.

Nearly impossible to categorize and even harder to actually explain, 'I'm Not There' is a whole lot more than a Bob Dylan biopic--while actually being a bit less than that, too. I'm actually going to go ahead and recommend that everyone wacth this--just have an open mind, and be recptive to the things that the medium of films can do. Yes, this is an 'art' movie but it stars some of today's hottest actors, so if you don't like it, at least you can look at all the pretty people.

This is a boring movie. It's really amazing what the actors bring here, but the combination of staccato editing and tongue-in-cheek reglossarizing the life and times of Bob Dylan makes the close attention to detail weary. It is a lot of prehensile Overman to take in for two hours. Who but saves me from shutting it off the second time, the inestimable Charlotte Gainsbourg. There are oodles of gimmicks swimming past your brain grapes, but the best ellipse in Haynes' film about rebirth is here with Heath Ledger and the family Dylan secretly held. Interesting take on narration, but kind of an easy out given the structure he chose. It's a beautiful film but steals from too many directors to count. Cate Blanchett is good as always.
