This is one of the best comedy movies I have seen. I love when their are akward moments in the scenes. The actors didn't have to exaggarate to be funny they made seem easy.

Oh God, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Good comedy in this day in age in Hollywood is so difficult to find. It just seems like over and over again it's P.O.S. after P.O.S. Although, I need to give Paul Rudd more credit than I do now, because he's been somewhat consistent with his comedies, unlike many other supposed "comedic actors." Now, that being said, was it the best comedy ever? Definitely not, but it is certainly worth at least one viewing because it will make you laugh. Also, for Jason Segel's big part premiere, as far as I know, was pretty good. Overall, I didn't walk away disappointed, but it's not worthy for my Library. I give it a solid B.

I Love You, Man, 2009
I really have mixed feelings about this film.
The film starts out as a forgettable, low stakes comedy. It seems like the writers were short on jokes, so they decide to just repeat the same ones. They do this thing where Paul Rudd starts a sentence, says something stupid because he is nervous and then ends the sentence with some made up words. It wasn't funny the first time, and 20 minutes in to the movie it became so frustrating I was tempted to just stop watching.
But I'm glad I kept on watching. It seems that halfway through someone realised the jokes weren't funny and the story was going nowhere. Somehow the film turns itself around and the last 40 minutes of the movie are really enjoyable.
But I don't think I need to sit through an hour of made up words and Paul Rudd saying "slap the base" about 30 times just to see 40 minutes of good cinema. The cast and the writers show they can make a good comedy, but for some reason they only show it for half a film.

A complete stinker. Grabbed pieces of about three other films and recycled it into this garbage. I normally like Rudd; he is terrible in this movie.

3-22-09 I can't imagine a cast including Paul Rudd and Jason Segel not being funny. This movie basically put them in a room together, told them the general plot and let them go off. The DVD gag reel will be entertaining in a few months. Peter Klaven (Rudd) is a real estate agent in Los Angeles. He's trying to sell Incredible Hulk actor, Lou Ferrigno's house. He is also preparing to marry Zooey (Rashida Jones). The problem is that Peter has never had close, guy friends. He's a "girlfriend guy" who enjoys watching Chocolat and The Devil Wear's Prada in his spare time. He has no Best Man for his wedding. He wants to find one and treats it as some men approach dating. He joins a male friend finder service on the internet, is set-up with a man by his gay brother (Andy Samberg), and he even meets someone through his mother. All attempts fail horribly, and his wedding day is rapidly approaching. The set-up to I Love You, Man takes a little time. We have to first see how pathetic Peter actually is, and how socially inept he can be. Writers John Hamburg and Larry Levin capture the awkwardness of first meetings perfectly. When people don't click, there's nothing anyone can do about it. We've all met someone we don't necessarily like or want to be friends with, but we have to survive the encounter for however long it lasts. For some, that's only in passing at a dinner gathering, and for others, it's a blind date that will last a couple hours. This movie depicts those moments beautifully. This movie will find its audience through DVDs later due to its more mature themes, like marriage and adult-living without masses of friends. The teen crowd will pass on this and will struggle to connect with it. For the recent college grads like me now a year out and younger adults, it's a very accurate representation of budding friendships and failed acquaintances. Three stars. tinyurl.com/dfryb3

This is an excellent comedy, using neither gross tricks nor excessive potty humour to be funny. I recommend it highly.
I do have a complaint about the captions. While the entire DVD, including special features, are captioned - a rarity for which they should win gold medals - all but one of the songs in the soundtrack is captioned. I find it highly insulting as someone who needs captions but is not completely deaf to see (song name plays) rather than the actual lyrics in the captions. Clearly, production laziness is not at play here, since they captioned everything. They just... glossed over the lyrics in the soundtrack. Often, the lyrics add a lot to the film.
So Im downgrading that aforementioned gold medal to a silver. If it were not for this, I would have given this feature five full stars.

The most uncomfortable movie I've ever watched. No chemistry between ANY of the actors. Weird awkward pauses, weird awkward humor. Nothing about this movie worked for me. Maybe if I was metro, a woman, gay, I dunno, but I'm not the target demographic. I love me a good chick flick, but this movie about guys trying to be friends gave me the creeps.
Guys are friends, or they're not, usually based on mutual activities they do together. If they're not friends, and become friends, violence is usually the necessary catalyst to make them become friends.
It's a simple formula, and somehow, this movie took weird guys I've never run across in this universe, and put some strange girl friendship formula on them.
Made my skin crawl.

Original twist on the classic rom-com, this movie tells a story that needed to be told: a tale of making friends. I've enjoyed Paul Rudd in comedic supporting roles and he finally gets his chance to shine in a starring role. By and large it is incredibly awkward and it works because it is hilarious. Reminiscent of "The Office" in that aspect Rudd's delivery sometimes reminded me of Carell. I cant wait to see it again because I have a feeling I'll be quoting this for a while.
