The critics didn't particularly like this one, but I must disagree. This is the story of a mentally handicapped man, played to perfection by Sean Penn, his 7 year old daughter and their journey trying to remain with each other when the law decides he's incapable of taking care of her. This one will most definitely make you cry! The highlight of the movie is the fantastic acting by Sean Penn, whose portrayal of mentally retarded Sam is even better than Tom Hanks' Forest Gump. Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of their lawyer is also remarkable and newcomer's Dokota Fanning's acting as the kid is also very touching. The movie explores the difficulties of parenting, the value of love above all else and of doing the right thing. Also, other important topics such as loyalty and true friendship. I didn't particularly like the end, but it certainly does not detract from the overall wonderful experience of the film.
The other reviewers who didn't like it for the most part didn't understand that the film is a metaphor for how difficult it is to be a parent and how sometimes even 'normal' parents feel inadecuate under the pressure.

This is onr of my fave films.
I must have seen this 3 or 4 times when I finaly got it sean pen plays a man with autisum grantes he is verry high funtioning. why am I bringing this up you ask its because we use the word retarded so often when we do...

I must have seen this 3 or 4 times when I finaly got it sean pen plays a man with autisum grantes he is verry high funtioning. why am I bringing this up you ask its because we use the word retarded so often when we do see some one who is actuatly autistic. let me tell you anouther thing. even though I loved this film, it had some huge holes people who have mental challanges some of them live with family others in group homes. they have social workers they recieve ssi. if they live allone they have some one who helps with the bills, cooking or cleaning. in sams caise he would have lived in a group home. if he did not have any family. other then that Its a great film we all can learn from

Touching tale
Sean Penn is wonderful as a handicapped man trying to raise his daughter with love and compassion while facing many challenges. Truly touching and one of my favorite films.
