The book by Diana Wynn Jones was a love story with mystery and fantasy, a more subtle character-driven story with many subplots involving Sophie's sisters and Howl's family and past.
The movie skipped over all this to fill it with a plot-hole-filled message of "War is bad." Well, duh.
By the end, the curse that turned Sophie into an elderly woman has been forgotten about and she's randomly morphing back and forth between different ages with no comment from any of the characters. The Witch of the Waste has become a pathetic, simple-minded figure. Calcifer, an intimidating fire demon in the book, has become a standard Disney wisecracking sidekick in the movie.
I don't understand why they even bothered to use the book at all -- why not give the characters different names and origins and make it a new story?

I watched the Japanese version with subititles, as I hate dubbed films, live or cartoon. Parts of the movie are dark, and the characters are - initially - morally ambiguous. I really enjoyed watching a Victorian-era Europe being represented through Japanese eyes. But the film pretty much stops making sense 80% of the way though, and at the end all the bad guys suddenly and without warning turn nice. My Pretty Pony Nice. It's "Let's stop this stupid war" and "OK" and roll credits. It was a four-star movie with a two-star finale and a one-star ending.

This is an incredibly unique and engaging film. However, I'm still not so good at following anime; it just plain confuses me, so I got lost on some plot points that could potentially have enlightened me a bit. What I was able to follow, however, I truly enjoyed. If you're an anime fan or have even enjoyed anime, I'm certain you'll like this. If you are unfamiliar with the genre, give this a try anyway, perhaps it'll hit home with you.

The animation was incredibly engaging. The storyline, while corny at times, is redeemed by other interesting and enjoyable aspects. This is the first anime movie I have watched. It has encouraged me to try more in the future.

This animation is different then what I use to see. It's much more melancholy and dark. Howl is a great powerful magician who helps one day to a young girl. That girl got cursed by an evil witch and become an old woman. To cancel the spell she finds Howl and is enormous moving castle. There is a special connection between them. She fall in love with him and he sees more then an old woman in her. Together with a few more friends they fight side by side against evil. It's a different and great movie. I saw it in Japanese and English subtitles (it's not my mother tongue…) and yet I enjoyed it a lot.
