Absolutely blown away.
The movie itself was not great. It was fun, I enjoyed it a lot, it was captivating, exciting, intense, poignant, well-animated, and all that, but not in any exceptional way (except maybe the animation, but I don't judge movies by that). I reserve "great" for movies that are really, well, great. However, the music was great. Beyond great. The music is the best I've heard in any animated movie. I would give the movie 10/10 just for the music. If I could rate the music individually, it would be 25/10. Unfortunately, since I don't care much for the story, and I don't want Jinni to mess up my recommendations, I must give it 6/10. But really, you must see it, if only for the music. I cannot stress enough how amazing the music is.

Much better than I expected, given the past few movies Dreamworks has released. Very bright animation, wonderful cinematography, terrific musical score and solid voice acting. The script gets "syrupy" at a few spots and the humor never really touched base with me, but I found the basic premise and execution to be so good that the movie sort of rose above its flaws. Realistically I would probably give it a 3.5, but since the star ratings are set in stone I'll give it a four. Fun movie, and bet the kids will love it.

Really good fun and a great story too.
This is a very rare animated film, as I think it ranks alongside the first Toy story or shrek, and is probably much better. The animation whilst not being cutting edge in terms of the technique is superb because the action and movements are so well...

Really good fun and a great story too.
This is a very rare animated film, as I think it ranks alongside the first Toy story or shrek, and is probably much better. The animation whilst not being cutting edge in terms of the technique is superb because the action and movements are so well observed and the creatures are really fantastically funny and soooo cool. The many amazing dragons are just so brilliantly executed.
The characters are really great and so likable and the voice cast does a very good job here. Without giving anything away I can say that the story is really funny but also very touching and definitely a feel good story (kind of like ET maybe) I would not hesitate to add this to my all time top ten and recommend it to anyone. 10/10

This movie was so good it could have been made by Pixar. Normally I find Dreamworks kids movies trite, boring, and instantly forgettable. As a 21-year-old who grew up in Disneys Renaissance era and came of age during Pixars, my standards for kids movies are high. I heard amazing things about How to Train Your Dragon and was completely blown away. The story is simple but relevant, and the characters are endearing. The graphics are simply gorgeous. My 19-year-old sister and I found ourselves going oh my god Toothless is so CUTE! several times throughout the movie. I actually got choked up at the ending. I cannot praise this movie highly enough. Parents, you wont have to sit through another two hours of brightly colored, clever talking animals and fart jokes this time; youll enjoy the movie as much, if not more, than your kids. In addition, I was pleased to see female characters being given similar responsibilities to the male characters; no helpess girls needed to be rescued, and women fought alongside men. Perhaps its a small thing to some, but to me, its definitely a positive! I seriously cannot think of a single negative thing about this movie. Add it to your queue!

Quite good!
I saw the trailer and cannot say I was crazy to go see the movie, but after weeks of good word of mouth i decided to see what the hooplah was about. And i was pleasantly surprised. when it comes to good animated movies the first thought is Pixar, as they tend to make movies with plenty of heart, emotion, and plenty of good old fashion fun. something Dreamworks movies tend to lack. but with 'How to train your dragon' I was blown away at the overall quality of the film, the developing relationships between the characters, the beautiful visuals, and surprisingly better 3D experience than that of a film like Avatar. Put simply, if you like movies than i suggest that you watch this, young or old I assure you that you will have a great time :)

All the things that were said about Avatar apply here. Nice graphics, banal plot, and definitely no Pixar's heart-warming story. I didn't mind the crazy accents mismatch, but for a story that tries to upset conventional fairy tales of hero slaying the dragon, it's such a cop-out that the hero, in the end, still has to slay a dragon.

When an animated film hits the mark for my 6 year old, myself and his grandparents, I know we're seeing something special. This gorgeous movie from the Pixar stable managed that. Every detail of the film worked for us, from the first-class animation (rendered even more spectacular by seeing the film in 3D)to the storyline (a children's movie with some genuine emotional depth - the relationship between the father and son is beautifully done), to the humour (laugh-out-loud funny without being crass - no fart jokes!). You don't need a child to have an excuse to see this wonderful movie. ;)

Although I have no child of my own to take to the cinema as an excuse I've decided to watch it, as the film fits children and adults alike. What the kids will find in the cute characters and amazing 3-D graphics the grown-ups will find in this wonderful tale of coming-of-age misfit and his relationship with his father. This film is worth any penny you may spend on it!
