House of Fools, 2002

The movie is robustly done and actors did a good job; some characters were actually pretty good. However the I couldn't help a feeling like "I saw this already" in almost every scene. The flow is predictable to the level of triviality. Looks like Konchalovsky had poised to take on the "Coockoo's Nest" but the masterpiece didn't happen and he resorted to political populism to save the business.

A wonderful screenplay handled beautifully by the lead actress. Too bad its periodically interrupted by cheesy, 80s style music videos. I guess the videos are the result of Konchalovskys years in Hollywood. Even so, the videos couldnt completely spoil it for me. The story sheds a lot of light on the idiocy and contradictions of the war in Chechnya. And Yuliya Vysotskaya just seems to embody the innocence and impulsiveness of her character. But it could have been a much better movie if her fantasies were focused on some star who didnt seem so hopelessly dated and irritatingly present as Bryan Adams is here.
