Couldn't get this out of my head for days afterwards
A harrowing, but brilliant film. Genuine acting, and great plot.

This is a gripping movie about the plight of Africans in Rwanda, and one man's journey as he is driven to save them. This film does a great job of showing the violence as it was, and how the Rwandans coped during this crisis.

I have seen this movie, and while I liked it and understand the urgency in which the story should be told, I felt this film was too heavy handed in conveying it's message. Cheadle's performance betrays his desire for Academy recognition, rather than conviction of the tale. The DVD would have also been enhanced by background of the tutsi-hutu conflict both before and after the Rusesabagina story.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting to like Hotel Rwanda. I wanted to see the film for Don Cheadle's Oscar-nominated performance, and that was about it. Sure, I expected it to be a "good" movie, but I didn't think I'd enjoy it. Well, I have to admit that I was wrong. I actually found Hotel Rwanda to be quite gripping. I wasn't expecting a story that would grab my attention early and hold onto it for the entire movie, but that's what I found.
The story was well told and effectively scripted. The acting performances were great across the board. Don Cheadle has really proved himself as an A-list actor with Hotel Rwanda. I feel that I can safely add him to my list of actors that I'll watch in anything, just to see his performance. The entire cast of characters really brought the story to life in a way that I wasn't expecting. Their emotions brought me to the edge of my seat, and I actually cared about the outcome of the movie. The situation in Rwanda circa 1993 was depicted in a manner that didn't hide the horror, but also wasn't too gruesome to stomach. I can't imagine this story being told in a more effective manner.
Hotel Rwanda is a very gripping story told in an expert fashion. Every aspect of the film made me believe in the characters and care about the outcome, which is something I can't say for too many dramas. The entire cast was excellent, especially the Oscar-nominated Don Cheadle. Hotel Rwanda is a solid all-around movie that I'd feel safe recommending to anyone looking for a good drama.

Hotel Rwanda, starring Don Cheadle, is a very powerful story about an event that many in the U.S. seemed to be in the dark about. In 1999, hundreds of thousands of people in Rwanda were killed just because of their racial heritage. I think we all heard of Rwanda and that the U.S. attempted to do something there, but I think most of us, at least my age (in high school), had no clue. So, that's the basic history - a massive genocide - now for the movie.
During all of the genocide, Paul Rusesabagina (Cheadle), a manager of one of the finest hotels in Rwanda, decides to try and protect as many Tutsis as he can from the Hutu militia. He does this by keeping them in the hotel after all of the regular guests and staff have evacuated. His main purpose is to protect his wife, also a Tutsi, even though he is technically Hutu. He brings in as many favors as he can and uses his connections and intellect to keep them safe. Meanwhile, the U.N. forces, led by Nick Nolte, protect the hotel as long as they can, without interfering in the war.
This movie had an element that caused it to be very gripping and powerful, which was the element of fear. Even though I had never been in the same situation, I could totally relate to what the characters were feeling, and I was constantly wondering when they were going to be safe at last. That fear makes the viewer's senses highten, which also makes for a better movie experience. But the only way that could be executed is by a great cast and crew. The moutpiece of the movie, Don Cheadle, acted in his best performance that I've seen yet. All of the extras and supporting cast were great as well, and really contributed to the movie. The DVD also had some pretty good extras that I recommend viewing, because you get to see the real Paul and more of the story behind the movie.

Hotel Rwanda is an extremely powerful film. The cast is excellent and Don Cheadle is at his best. If only this film was more popular, it would have won Best Picture.

i am willing to bet you will cry in it
a difficult movie to watch - horrible acts of violence and murder occured in Africa and the world didn't do anything about it. the film is very emotional and bleak, showing the genocide that occurred in the 90s.
