One of the most horrifying movies I have seen. Don't waste your time. Gratuitious torture is not satisfying in anyway. Terrible acting and absolutely no closure.

This movie is the Family Guy of horror flicks. Lots of nasty gore just for the sake of it. The characters are weak and hardly believable, and too dumb for you to feel any bad for them.
Don't believe the Tarantino brand in all of the advertising; this is NOT, by all means, anywhere near Quentin quality. Rather, this is the kind of crappy, gory movie that inspired him to make movies in his youth and is definitely what motivates him to produce.

The only people who might enjoy it are 14 year old boys. There is plenty of nudity to add to the "so what" factor. The plot seems like it was written by a retard. There is nothing novel or the least bit interesting about this film. I watched it while putting together Ikea furniture and the furniture was more interesting.

Don't watch this. I am no prude, I am no conservative, I am no oldhead, and I happen to enjoy the horror genre quite a bit. But there is something disgusting on a basic human level about watching human torture--for it's own sake and basically void of contextual reasoning--as entertainment. Period. End of story. Disgusting, ammoral, and a harbinger of even worse things to come that finally show that films can, in fact, negatively affect our culture.

Thank goodness there are films like Hostel to remind us what a good horror film is. While horror films are not my favorite genre, if I am going to take the time to watch one I want to make sure I am moved by it. After all, the reason we watch horror films in the first place is to tap that emotion of true fear which we are deprived from with most of what comes out of Hollywood these days labeled as horror.
When Jaws hit the theaters in the late 70's I remember thousands of people were afraid to ever get back in the water after viewing it, much like what Psycho did for those who could never again take a shower comfortably. Hostel may very well make the average person never want to travel to Europe.
While parts of this movie made me want to turn away I could not help but admire the fact that the director forced you in the shoes of the victims and not protect you from their pains, screams and raw emotions they experienced. The director, Eli Roth (Cabin Fever) is obviously inspired by some of the great horror classics like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and does not refrain from showing scenes that many audiences will become uncomfortable watching. In fact, if you are a person that watches this film with both eyes open the whole time without squirming in your seat then there is cause for some concern (professional help is available).
This movie is certainly not for the squeamish. I am not a squeamish person but parts of this film truly tested me. Again, I have to applaud the fact that the director did not shy away for the various scenes of human torture, blood and gore; these are the elements that let the audience know that they were dealing with a real horror film. I say if you are going to do it then do it right and make it believable.
