Summary of Hoosiers

Failed college coach Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) gets a chance at redemption when he is hired to direct the basketball program at a high school in a tiny Indiana town. After a teacher (Barbara Hershey) persuades star player Jimmy Chitwood to quit and focus on his long-neglected studies, Dale struggles to develop a winning team in the face of community criticism for his temper and his unconventional choice of assistant coach: Shooter (Dennis Hopper), a notorious alcoholic.

I'm not a fan of sports movies, but Hoosiers is often rated as the best sports movie of all time, so I though I'd give it a chance. I'm glad I did; it was much better than I expected. Generally, it seems like most sports movies follow the same pattern, they're all cast from the same mold. The team overcomes its adversities and makes a run at the "big game." They don't always win the championship, but they're all winners in the end... Sound familiar? Hoosiers was no different. A troubled coach comes to a small town to coach a high school basketball team. He insists on doing things his way even though the town hates change. There's fighting and arguing, but, in the end, the coach turns things around and the team takes a shot at the state championship. The plot isn't original. Neither are the characters. You've got the insecure short guy, the tough rebel, and the kid who suffered the loss of a parent and refuses to play. The coach has a checkered past, but he's trying to get past it. The assistant coach is an alcoholic, and maybe the game can help him ditch the vice. At this point, the movie sounds so cliche that I'm wondering why I liked it. I think it was the acting that won me over. All of the actors, not just Gene Hackman, really put on some outstanding performances. They made their characters more than words on a page and gave the movie some heart. They made me care about the team, about their families, about them... And in a movie like this, that makes a world of difference. Hackman was good, but it was Dennis Hopper who shocked me. I think he showed more emotion in Hoosiers than he has in all of his other roles combined! The audio was tinny and hollow, especially during the arena and gym scenes. The dialogue was still clear and easily understood, but the fidelity was poor. The video looked like a VHS, it was very grainy and very soft. I noticed some slight edge enhancement in a few scenes and some severe pixelation in others.
