Haunting
I watched Hollywoodland not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. Perhaps not Oscar-winning material but this is certainly an underrated film that should get more coverage. The film stayed with me a lot longer than I thought it would, and the more I thought about it, the sadder and sadder it seems. Affleck is terrific as Reeves and Brody does rather well considering he's playing a fictional person and as such has to pull the character out of the air with very little reference (Affleck's perfomance is far better though). Definitely worth a watch and it will stay with you.

Watchable neo-noire whodunnit without any particularly outstanding performances and an unsatisfying resolution that ends up pretty much where things began. Along the way we meet several movie stereotypes: the has-been actor, the overbearing mother, the spurned sugar mama, the slutty ex-girlfriend with a New York accent, the loser private detective who gets beat up a lot and the iron-fisted studio mogul. An interesting enough story to keep stringing the audience along until the end, but it never quite gels into anything to get excited about. The parallel stories of the detective and the deceased actor, both of whom desperately want to believe themselves to be more than they really are but come to different conclusions about doing the right thing, almost works. Almost. Unforunately, Adrien Brody's Frank Simo is too cartoonish and his performance never compelling enough to elicit the sympathy to make him someone to care about. Entertaining enough to watch once but ultimately forgettable.

Affleck has never been better, and this is certainly in Diane Lane's top ten. Adrien Brody was OK, but a bit miscast, methinks. The story is a serious one but never falls into any melodramatic traps; the tone remains even and pitch perfect throughout. Truly beautiful scene to watch for: the scene where Affleck's George Reeves is playing guitar for his friends. Watch, listen, and pay close attention: you'll see that the film's best attributes all rise to the surface in this scene, and that Affleck has the potential to be a master actor.

Two intertwined and related stories make up Hollywoodland -- the story of actor George Reeves, who starred in TVs Superman, and the tale of a fictional detective investigating Reeves suicide. Reeves was a good-looking, charming, talented guy who dreamed of being a genuine Hollywood film star; although he was a success as Superman and a hero to millions of kids, it wasnt enough. (This story is based closely on the facts.) The detective looking into his death is smart, talented and attractive to others but in his own eyes a failure. His investigation into Reeves suicide at first is his ticket, he thinks, into the big time if he can prove Reeves was murdered. Whats so good about the movie is that it shows the detective gradually realizing how much like Reeves he is and that unless he changes hell end up just like Superman. Thats when he begins seeing the case and his own life a lot more clearly. Its all well done in the film.

I enjoyed it a lot
a well-made and stylish thriller. the pace is kinda slow, but I can't think of another way for making such a film. the acting was good and I can definitely recommend it.
