A Solid Adaptation
When I watched this movie for the first time I had recently read the book this is based on. While I enjoyed the book more, I still enjoyed this movie. I think my favorite part was the opening, "So Long and Thanks For All the Fish." (I had that song stuck in my head for days.)

Since the very beginning, when Hitch Hiker's Guide appeared as a series on British radio in the 1970s, this has been a subliterate exercise in entertaining college dropouts. It is widely believed that the angst in the story is derived from Britain's debate about joing the European Common Market. The subsequent books and now the film have not improved things. In fact, the film, by being so literal, has reduced the talky, editorial tone of the book to one big disjointed and frenetic chase scene. Some clever moments and good effects, but a failure overall.

I saw this movie when it came out and was---somewhat to my surprise---quite entertained. But apparently it is one of those movies lots of people just hate, hate, hate (or simply find incomprehensible), so I watched it again to double-check my reaction. Result: I still love this sweetly goofy movie. Filled with silliness, it has some rather pointed observations (and kindly moments) about both eternal life (in all likelihood impossible but intriguing) as well as contemporary life (maddening, but, ah well...) all under its tasty froth. A happy pleasure, like revisiting childhood, but with much smarter jokes, and maybe even a bit of sly wisdom. 9.09

What a fun movie! This movie will have you grinning from the beginning scene with the dolphins to the very end. I must admit that I have never read the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy so this was my first impression of it. What a great impression it was. All through this movie the fun and laughs never cease. Alien worlds and just weirdness in general are done so well that this movie can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
Nothing of note that would be inappropriate for children. The PG rating keeps it clean.
What a great way to start a weekend. I smiled more in that movie than I can remember smiling during a movie in a long time. What a great uplifting movie that will make you feel good from the beginning all the way until the end.

The cinematic equivalent of Vogon poetry, and fans of the book will know what I mean by that. For the rest, I'll just say this is like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy without the British humor and will not pique your interest in reading the book....

4/10Disappointing
I am a huge fan of the book, and went for the movie as soon as I could. After doing a bit of research online, I was expecting the worst. And boy, was I satisfied.
They'd changed the whole story!! Things happen which just aren't in the book. Just an attempt to sell a movie sure, but was it really necessary to introduce TWO love triangles in the movie?? Don't be suprised to see characters you don't have any idea about.. Don't be suprised to see many of Doughlas' concepts just grossly mis-represented.. I felt so angry when I saw the "For Doughlas" at the end.. Dont be suprised to see a new weapon which forms the key of the story which was absent from the book.. don't be suprised to find zaphod's head chopped off..
Now the good. Yes, it is funny. Not in the clever witty way the book was, but the movie's funny in a screwball slapstick way. I almost felt insulted that they thought they had to dumb down the movie. But still, it is funny.
Some of the characters have been potryaed very well. Marvin, of course, but that couldn't have been too difficult. The Vogons though were very well done, and something which seemed difficult to achieve. The guide itself was also presented very aptly, with a nice interface, and a really funny method of animation.
And yeah, the special effects are fabulous. Then Arthur sees all the planets being built in the factory, u almost sigh in suprise with him.
In the end, its a funny movie if you don't expect it to be anything like the book, and don't expect yourself to follow the story if you havent read the book. HHGTG fans should see it once too, I guess, cause some of the things do feel right.

Poorly done
I arrived at the theater with high expectations for this movie only to be terribly let down. I guess the movie is never as good as the book, and this movie fails to deliver in every aspect. The acting was horrible, the screenplay poorly written and it completely failed to capture the magic and mystery of the book. I recommend everyone to read the book and stay away from this film. Two thumbs down!
