China, like Europe, was once a collection of competing states. This film goes back to those days. The message is, that a murderous superstate, portrayed by the Emperor, is a "blessing" so long as it prevents interstate squabbles. As such, this film is a not-so-subtle propaganda piece for the present Chineese government who engineered Tienneman square. Beyond this, it is a piece of myth-making for the Chinese state in general which smacks of the simple-minded mock-heroic pieces we have been accustomed to see from Nazi Germany, Communist Russia etc. Despite the skillful special effects, this is a nasty piece of work. Avoid it.

10/10Must See
Between Crouching Tiger, Hero, and House of Flying Daggers I liked this film the best. You have to be somewhat mature to understand the theme underlying the plot (some of the reviewers here must be 12 year old boys). To keep it short, this film has it all: beautiful stylistic scenes, extremely artistic and original combat scenes, a captivating and multi-layered story, and a theme reflecing Chinese Taoism. Its a martial arts masterpiece and the best thing that Jet Li Has ever done. Ignore the reviews from kiddies raised on Grand Theft Auto.

8/10Great
If you are a fan of martial arts and oriental storytelling, then please rent Hero as soon as possible and you won't be sorry. I would also highly recomment this to anyone that liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or anyone that is a cinematography buff. The story of Hero, without giving too much away, is the narrative account by a man that killed 3 legendary assassins that were out to kill the first emperor of China.
If anything, you should see this movie for some of the most breathtaking images that you will ever see on a movie or television screen. The martial arts are exquisitely done as well, a la Crouching Tiger style. What I mean by that is you will see the characters do things that aren't humanly possible (like jump gracefully 50 ft into the air), but somehow believe that they just can because of who they are. The acting also seemed to be very good, but not great. One thing I have trouble with in watching foreign language films is reading the subtitles while trying to watch the imagery. But because of that, I got to really understand the dialogue and story, which was great. Finally, and I will repeat this if necessary - this is not your typical Jet Li film. Even though Li is in it, this is a very different type of film from the others in his portfolio.
