Until the last 10 minutes, I was watching one of the most thoughtful and interesting movies in years about faith and doubt, life and death and all that stuff. Then, apparently, the writer got lazy, and wrapped it up in a big fat contrived hurry, even ending with the single most overused cliche in movies. Oh, and way too many long shots of Luke Wilson wallowing in his pain. Was four stars, maybe even five, until that ending.

3 STARS: Satisfying. An Enjoyable Movie.
This movie is poignant and a bit of a tearjerker. It is witty, understated, inspiring and emotional. If you cry at movies get ready to pull out the kleenex. There are a few funny moments but it really isnt a true comedy. Henry Poole (Luke Wilson) cuts himself off from the world. Indulging on a diet of Krispy Kreme donuts, pizza, beer and champagne. and binges on Twinkies, pizza and liquor.
That is until his neighbors intrude on his world because of the appearance of a water stain on the side of his house. A water stain that his hispanic neighbor assumes is a true miracle because it looks remotely like the visage of Christ.
The rest of the town buys into the belief that it is a true miracle replete with healing powers. All the while Henry Poole, ever the pessimist, does his best to keep strangers out of his backyard. His secret keeps him from enjoying the simple joys of life the affection of his beautiful next door neighbor Dawn (Radha Mitchell, the mother from Man on Fire ), the motherly concern of his backyard neighbor Esperanza (Adriana Barraza the nanny in Babel) and the wide eyed curiosity of Millie (Morgan Lily). What is his dark secret one that keeps him so sad and angry? Great performances all around from the stellar cast with a truly poignant turn by Morgan Lily (the 5 year old girl from Hes Just Not That In to You) who does a lot of emoting with just her eye movements remarkable for an actress so young.

Sorry, but this film lost me when blood started coming out of the wall. The film is classified as a comedy, but the only funny thing about it was that it reminded me of that old SNL skit, 'find the Pope in the Pizza' by Father Guido Sarducci! The Good News? You don't have to be an athiest to be annoyed by this thinly-disguised religious-propaganda film; the hackneyed script & poor acting will do the job. And sorry, but Esperanza was just plain irritating (and her attachment to "God's face" was only partly responsible for that...) I'm not an atheist, nor do I have a problem with films about God, miracles, faith & hope ('Simon Birch' is one of my favorite movies.) Heck, I can even stomach stories about the stigmata if they're well-written. But a bad film is a bad film. In fact, watching too many films like this might just TURN me into an atheist. Luke Wilson must have been fooled like the rest of us, thinking he was signing on for a comedy instead of a movie about a grieving filmmaker's religious beliefs, along with the requisite distrust of science... ~NN

He is such a dynamic performer. The plot boils down to this: If you think the people that see Jesus in grilled cheese sandwiches are crackpots, you're just a hardened cynical jerk. One star.

The acting was good and the comedy excellent at times, but the description fails to mention that the story is based on religion. It is NOT a "black comedy".

Take a few raw Diane Arbus or (more recently) William Eggleston photos for visual inspiration of everyday suburban desolation/pleasantness, some good intentions, and a big dose of sentimentality. With all that you sort of have this movie about a disconsolate character, played with effective sincere despair by Luke Wilson. The sadness of the protagonist, which seems more about the chaos of his early childhood than his recent bad news, is well-portrayed by Wilson. But it just does not add up to much, either as inspiration or affirmation, although it tries quite good-naturedly to bridge the gap between miracles of faith and rational reality. It doesn't do justice to either ultimately. The sense of childhood, however, is well-observed in glimpses of his flashbacks, and in the odd little girl next door with her remembering everything, symbolized by her literally tape-recording adult conversations. That's what the sincere screenwriter of this effort probably in his head did as a kid, too. Not quite three stars, and I feel kind of mean giving it just two. 2.09

To say this movie is slow is understatement. It is excruciatingly, painfully slow. In between the long, tedious stretches there is a decent movie, but it takes so long to happen that it's hard to stay with it. I finally started fast-forwarding through long stretches of dialog-less reaction shots and mood-setting scenery until I could actually see the movie.

Just horrible It has a strong start, but just falls apart about ten minutes into it. I think the only way someone might like this is if they're coming to it not only from a religious background, but one focused on the idea of miraculous direct intervention into peoples lives. If you have any experience with the fraudulent nature of these happenings, the movie will instead probably just annoy you.

This isn't a bad movie, it just suffers from too many hokey one liners and too many scenes with people looking melancholy while sad songs play. The story is predictable, although the young girl Millie's storyline was somewhat interesting(and she has some of the biggest prettiest eyes I've seen). The one thing that surprised me was how many times I laughed during the first half hour. I didn't know this was a comedy when I rented it, but the laughs peter out towards the end. George Lopez, who I thought might provide some funny lines, could have been replaced by a cardboard cutout and I don't think it would've made a difference. I've also read descriptions of this that talk about Henry leaving his fiance and family business, but I didn't see anything about either of those in the film.
