Helvetica, 2007

I work in graphic design, so I had some extra interest in this film. However, I found that what was blatantly missing was the context in which Helvetica was created. The film showed who did it and why, etc., but I would have found it more significant if the film showed us the typefaces that had been in wide use before Helvetica. There was a brief scene showing old ads from the 50s (Bierut), but it seems odd to rely on the audience to already know the significance of Helvetica. Also, the cut was about 30 minutes too long given the relentless intermissions between interviews/voiceovers showing Helvetica being used in everyday life---we get it in the first 10 minutes, no need to keep showing ads/signs to the end. Other than that, I thank the makers for creating it.
