This would be a fantastic extra for one of the 47 differently packaged DVD releases of Apocalypse Now. As a standalone release its still a pretty good documentary. It really captures the chaos and paranoia of the people involved in the project like only a primary document can; (Coppolla seemingly on the edge of sanity for half the production; Hopper being such a drug-addled mess that he could barely play a character that was a drug-addled mess; Brando showing up 50 pounds overweight, not even knowing what the film was about; military conflicts and mother nature stacking the deck against them; etc). If you're a fan of the film that it chronicles, its well-worth the rental.

This is a great documentary, but why the heck did I have to wait so long to see it? Is Francis really not happy with his portrayal in this documentary? I really didn't think there was anything outlandish going on here.

If you like 'Apocalypse Now', then you must watch this. A brazen, raw, no-holds-barred look behind the scenes of the torturous production of the film, told with interviews with Coppola both at the time of the filming and 30 years later. This documentary goes well beyond "behind the scenes", though, as it crafts a complete and haunting portrait of a man obsessed by his art--and by the drive to create something beautifully perfect.
