The low star folks are onto something in that this film is dark, upsetting, overdone, violent, and has a familiar plot. But this film was exquisitely done and in balance earns 4 stars from this reviewer. The acting is terrific throughout (but my Oscar goes to the drug dealer), the photography is imaginative and very well done, the music is excellent if fairly heavy-handed, and the set design is very good. This is a director to take note of.
The film was so well done that when it was over we actually sat through the deleted scenes and enjoyed many of them.

Real life batman!
After taking on the role of Batman's butler, Michael Caine gives us a wonderful role as a real-life batman. Without the sci-fi gadgets and preposterous amounts of money, Caine gives us a wonderful show as a dark avenger, taking on a city full of criminals. It is not the first vigilante film, but it is sure as hell on of the better ones.

A very bleak film
Don't expect a British version of Gran Torino.
This is a very dark revenge thriller that offers its characters little hope and centers on social decay.
Michael Caine is great as usual.
