I loved this movie. Reminded me very much of Muriels Wedding. I have always liked Sally Hawkins since I first became aware of her in FINGERSMITH I think this movie was just fantastic, I cannot rave about it enough. I recommend it. 5 Stars.

"Happy-Go-Lucky" starts off on a good foot, but quickly goes downhill. The main character, Poppy, is constantly laughing and giggling, which quickly becomes annoying. Poppy seems to have a propensity to help people with her "happiness" and "laughter." What she really should do is help herself. The movie left me feeling very anxious and nervous. Am I supposed to feel like Poppy has a lot of problems and needs serious help? What a waste of two hours that I will never get back!

This plot-less, episodic film just barely gets a passing grade on the strength of Sally Hawkins' performance alone. After reading other reviews I was expecting to be annoyed by her eternally optimistic character, but I didn't find Poppy to be all that odd, really. She's just living in the wrong country. If she lived in Canada or the American mid-west, she'd seem perfectly normal amongst all the other psychotically cheerful people there. In some ways she reminds me of a less delusional but more giggly and chattery version of my namesake, from the film Harvey. Poppy and Elwood both live to make friends, have fun, and avoid the harsh realities of life. But that's where the similarities end between this film and that classic, light-hearted fantasy. Where Elwood succeeded in spreading happiness wherever he went, Poppy tries and fails to help three different miserable men, each at a different stage of life, without ever experiencing any lasting changes to her mood. Happy-Go-Lucky isn't exactly a dark film, but it's also not really a feel-good film, in that it doesn't give us anything in particular to feel good about. It may, however, give you something to think about or at the very least forever change the way you look at rear-view mirrors.

8/10Great
"HAPPY-GO-LUCKY" presents Poppy, an irrepressible, vital, high-on-life character who at the same time is no fool, and shows her interacting with family, friends, students (she teaches kids), and a date, on one hand; and on the other a variety of sourpusses who've let life beat them down. Chief among the latter is a driving instructor, whose anger, jealousy, racism and repression seems to billow out more and more each time he takes Poppy for a lesson. He's like the grown-up version of a bullying student that Poppy has taken under her wing. The film is more a slice-of-life than a structured drama with beginning, middle and end. But what a life! We come to like Poppy and her coterie very much. The acting is high caliber, and as with all Mike Leigh movies, the dialog is sharp, believable, and funny. And so real. This is a very intelligent and enjoyable movie that manages to avoid virtually all the film cliches. The DVD contains a director's commentary and two very short "making of" videos that are somewhat pretentious paeans to the director.

Definitely a slow-boil, but the characters in this film are so textured and well defined that even bit players deliver some of the most memorable scenes. This is a brilliant script and features some of Britian's best charcter actors. Sally Hawkins' Poppy will go down as one of Leigh's most interesting portraits - while Poppy never breaks her all-too-buoyant, jokester persona, our perception of her world view transforms from annoying to enlightening as those around her begin to melt down into a sea of self pity. Are lucky people happy or are happy people lucky? Watch and decide for yourself.
