I'm not normally one for musicals, and I've long considered the original "Hairspray" to be among John Waters' weaker films, but after all of the positive buzz about the 2007 version I thought I should at least give it a chance. Now that I have, I'm left wondering what people saw in this! Like many people, I was curious to see John Travolta's performance. How well would he fill Divine's tremendous shoes? The answer: quite poorly, indeed. Aside from the fat suit and drag, which were mildly amusing for the first 15 seconds on screen, I found Travolta to be utterly repulsive. The Dr. Evil accent left me cold and, generally, I found his Edna to be one of the most irksome performances ever. Nicole Blonsky is perky and optimistic to the point that I had to fast-forward through much of her saccharine time on screen. Christopher Walken, one of my favorite actors, goes nowhere fast. Throw in big, brassy show tunes, costumes that came out of the primary colors row in a Crayola box, and a ham-handed message about racial equality and harmony, and it all added up to a film so appalling that I simply could not bear watching the last half hour. I really am left scratching my head over this. What do people see in a flick that makes "Moulin Rouge" look intelligent? Unless you're a big fan of Broadway musicals, I suggest you stay away from this bleach-blond usurper of all things John Waters (who, by the way, does do a cameo as a flasher).

Sadly, this was extremely dissapointing. Totally over-produced, flat and drab. Divine is turning in his grave. I come from the old school of John Waters, and to see this re-make overdone and lame was a let down. The music and songs were terrible. The script boring. John Ravolta ruined Divine's original character. Yikes. Glad I avoided it at the theater. I would have had to walk out. Painful.

This is an awesome version of this movie! The songs and dance numbers are spectacular and really get the blood pumping, and the story changes that have been made from the original seem natural, important and socially relevant. Nicole Blonsky is a fantastic actress, almost besting Rikki Lake's performance in the original; she displays an inner life and a charm that is crucial to this film's susccess. Also, Travolta, Walken, Pfeiffer and Latifah populate this teen world with believable and vibrant adults. I had a sense of joy from this movie. It gets four instead of five stars for not ending perfectly.

"Hairspray" 2007 is a good-natured musical with likable music. The acting isn't great, and John Travolta brings nothing special to the film despite a great fat suit (even his dance moves disappoint). If you have to see only one "Hairspray," let it be the John Waters-directed original, with the irreplaceable Divine and the irresistible Rikki Lake. But if you want a musical version and can't see the play, this 2007 version one will do.
