Predictable, poorly-written, poorly-cast, littered with cinematic cliches, one-dimensional, cloaked with gaping plot holes and is one of the most heavy-handed films I have seen in a very long time. Very unfortunate since Mr. Eastwood has proven himself to be an incredibly talented director who recognizes a great script when he sees one.

With good intentions and very good performances, this is saved from being forgettable pablum. Nonetheless, it is essentially old 1970s (like the car in question) Clint Eastwood formula stuff recycled cookie-cutter style to new political realities and, let us acknowledge, the near 80th birthday of the great star Eastwood, who may charitably be almost as still-shiny as the nouveau-classic Gran Torino in his driveway. (He even tries to sing a sad song over the closing credits!) It is a pretty good slice-of-life about the socio-economic dislocations of modern America, if a bit predictably sentimental. Therefore, his fans may be very pleased indeed, while most others can pass this one up without a lot of regret. 2.9 stars. 10.09

Clint has definitely improved in his years, likely to do with his confidence and not having to rush to action. His movies now take their time to really lay out the land of characters and relationships and this one is true to form. He plays a bitter man who just loses his wife and now has to deal with neighbours from other countries (he assumes they're all Korean, he's a Korean vet, in fact they're Hmong). The one prized possession of his years that he cherishes is his Gran Torino car, which becomes the focal point of a Hmong gang initiation attempt - to steal his car. After Sue wears down his protective exterior, he begins to talk and interact with his neighbours (albeit often grudgingly) and helps Sue and Thao. The rest - you'll have to watch for yourself. It's not a fast paced movie - and this is not an action flick, so do not expect that. I also doesn't play out like you'd expect and in hindsight, it's all the better for it. I really liked this, and while I became impatient at times with the pace, it's not overly long. I would recommend it.

If you're all into political correctness don't watch this movie because you'll just cringe. It contains almost every ethnic slur imaginable. But if you can get past that you'll see perhaps the best movie Clint Eastwood has ever made.

I was surprisingly disappointed in this one since Clint Eastwood has produced so many gems over the past decade. In this one, his acting felt forced and exaggerated, while the screenplay came across as patronizing and typical of Hollywood's dumbed down version of race relations (think Crash). Bee Vang was on the money though, as a lost hmong youth trying to find his way. While not great, the film is entertaining and worth watching on DVD. Just don't set your expectations too high.

An original film that makes you care for all of the characters involved. This film can be viewed as harsh and brutal yet funny and loving. The only thing that bugged me about the movie was Eastwood constantly moaning at things that bothered him (and yes I'm nitpicking on that one). Gran Torino took you on a journey and never let you get too comfortable as a viewer. Your guard will be down and something would happen to jolt you. You expect something to happen and it gives a tender and lighthearted moment. I don't like to give away the movie in reviews but if you want to experience something different than a popcorn flic, Gran Torino is it. Along with MILK, Gran Torino deserves a couple of Oscar nods.
