Within 10 minutes I was rooting for the Germans and their heavy bombers to put the entire lot of these pompous idiots out of my misery, preferably in some Dresden-like fireball. The film never got better or changed my mind.

one of my all time favourite films. Exploring the genres of the Britsh murder mystery and the whole upstairs/downstairs regime of British class systems. I find this a funny, dramatic and thoughtful film that works on so many levels. If you want an easy laugh - this isn't it, but if you want alot of detail, subtle humour poking fun at all sorts of society behaviour from those days, brilliant actors and are a fan of the British style murders this is for you.

I'd rather have hot coals imbedded into my eye sockets than sit through the first 30 minutes (I watched) again. It is an overwhelmingly humorless, beige and pretentious film.

Sooo boringgg. Took too long to get to the point, and when it did, I was completely disappointed and, sad to say, I saw it coming. Blah. Stupid. 1.5 stars. 1/14/08

I'm not a big Robert Altman fan. I've always found his signature gimmick of overlapping conversations so that the audience will have difficulty discerning what any particular character is saying to be unsurprisingly annoying, and sure enough, this gimmick is in full force in Gosford Park. Thankfully, God invented the subtitle feature for DVDs, no doubt with Altman's films in mind. It was for this reason, and the fact that I'm a fan of the drawing room mystery genre that I decided to give this a rent. As a murder mystery it's very disappointing. The murder doesn't even occur until well into the second half of the film. The first half could be described as boring, but it could also be described as an enlightening depiction of the upstairs/downstairs-style of class separation that existed in Edwardian England. I would say it's a little of both. The almost PBS-documentary-like peek into the everyday lives of servants and aristocrats gets old rather quickly, and you find yourself begging for something to happen. Even when that something finally does happen, it's not terribly exciting. The only thing that saves this film from getting only 2 stars is Stephen Fry's all too brief appearance in the third act to provide some comic relief.
