The themes of this film are so sweeping, I find it impossible to approach its qualities in a few lines. I find this film to be very much about individualism, romance, a timeless nostalgia for golden days. I also think that herein is depicted a battle between individualism and idealism. I've seen the film countless times since I discovered it, and I find it immensely important. As a social test it is interesting to observe how people react to it, and consider what that means about different people.

If movie are made as diversions or as sheer entertainment, then this is the greatest of them all. Certainly there have been better films than GWTW, including several made in the same year (Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington -- and those are just from the US!). But this film shows what the studio system was capable of when it invested enough effort and money into a property. In retrospect, the film's sentimental attitude towards marital rape and slavery and race relations is almost grotesque some seventy years later, but Hattie McDaniel actually gets to act without (quite) being a caricature. Of the four principals, Melanie is too good to be true. Olivia de Havilland plays her with a cloying sweetness that is more a script limitation than any slur on her talent. Leslie Howard as Ashley is honorable and decent and as bland as a slice of Velveeta(R); I believe the film's biggest flaw is that the viewer can't see why Scarlett wants him so badly. Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh give performances for the ages. Clark Gable is handsome, virile, dashing - he makes Rhett into a perfect example of the morally ambiguous hero (think Han Solo with a little more polish). Leigh really sells her role as Scarlett well - her transformation from fatuous manipulative flirt to cunning manipulative vixen to the happily tamed wife is very convincing. The film is in glorious Technicolor, so most of the colors are more saturated than in real life. In fact, the picture ends up with more than its share of entirely-too-gorgeous sunsets and sunrises, not to mention explosions and fires. Very well shot, including a few shadows borrowed from German expressionist films. If the film was made now, Atlanta would be a computer image, Brad Pitt would be Rhett, and half the running time would be cut. So let's be happy it's an relic of different age in Hollywood.

Dysfunction in the Old South
If you thought families were dysfunctional now, just wait until you see the O'Haras, Wilkes, and Butlers. So many great characters that at times you love, other times you hate, and sometimes find just annoying.
