Gritty but elegant, really just stunning
What else can I say. Definitely makes my top 10 of the 2000's. The acting is superb, the story flowed smoothly and the ending was gripping and draws a tear from my eye every time.

I was not impressed with Braveheart, I felt it to be a disjointed film that lacked sophistication. Naturally when I thought about renting Gladiator, I was worried it would be like Braveheart, but I figured with a director like Ridley Scott at the helm it should be good. Gladiator is nothing short of a masterpiece, what interests Scott are his characters and situations. By putting the story first everything falls together seamlessly. The action scenes are thrilling and realistic. Russel Crowe is simply badass as Maximus, and the other actors especially Joaquin Pheonix, who plays a particularly slimy role, are all fantastic. It's the perfect length too. A must rent for anyone who loves an intelligent action flick.

Amazing action is all I can say about this movie. If you try and say that this movie is driven by it's story I think that's pretty sad.
You can pretty much take the bare bones plot and put it in another movies.
Man looses family, wants vengence from the antagonist and becomes the victor in the end. Wow havn't seen that a lot of times.
They could have done so much better with the story line but they stuck with cheap drama which in my case turned into pure drivel.
I think if you put all the action away from this movie you'd find it a boreing story line.
Oh and by the way when Russell says that they need to fight together when there in the arena you can't tell me that wasn't one of the most predictable parts of the movie.
