Get Shorty, 1995

Get Shorty is a somewhat complicated tale of a low-level gangster who, by turns of fate, leaves the life of crime behind and becomes a movie producer. This is not nearly as serious as it sounds. Most of it is funny, some of it is romantic, some of it is action-oriented, some of it is dramatic, and it is all 100 percent badass. John Travolta plays his most interesting and fully-developed character ever, Chili Palmer. Chili Palmer is seriously one of the most badass dudes to ever grace a film. Travolta developed a unique rhythm of speech, a way of moving, even a way of smoking especially to convey Chili Palmer. And the supporting cast could not be better: Rene Russo, Danny DeVito, Delroy Lindo, James Gandolfini, Gene Hackman, Bette Midler…it goes on and on. This movie is pure Hollywood fun, and it has an amazing look to it, as well (it doesn't look anything like the glossy Hollywood dreck that most of Director Barry Sonnenfeld and Cinematographer Donald Peterman's other films look like). In Peterman's defense, he did shoot Point Break and Cocoon.
