Profile of Gamer

Gamer can be described as rough, suspenseful, and bleak. The plot revolves around a future dystopia, imprisonment or confinement, and imaginary themes. The main genres are thriller, action, and sci-fi. In approach, Gamer is fantastical and serious. The storytelling is fast paced. It is set, at least in part, in a prison. Gamer is well suited for a boys' night. Note that it involves strong sexual content, strong violent content, and nudity.

Summary of Gamer

Each week Kable (Gerard Butler), a death-row inmate, battles his fellow prisoners in a violent online game called "Slayers," his every move controlled by a young gamer's remote device. To the players, Kable and the other inmates are just simulated characters. But, to a resistance group that opposes the game's inventor, Kable is a critical component of their plan to end the inventor's form of high-tech slavery.

Surprisingly Effective Satire
What makes this film work as an engaging work of satire is how plausible it looks. The key word is "looks;" certainly the "science" used to explain the mind-control systems is risible, and the weak script doesn't do anything with its trite...
Excellent effects and sound engineering. Pure science fiction, in that it projects current tech trends into the future and tells a story which exploits resulting social tensions. Actually a very moral cautionary tale. Not for the squeamish, however.
