Some reviewers seem to think this movie is against violence or something? I'm not quite sure, but I don't think so. It depicts sadism realistically. It does a good job of creating upsetting violence without really being graphic at all.. They were daring in the creation of this movie you could say, but it kind of left me shaking my head. I didn't see it as an "art-house" movie, I just saw it as a sadistic romp in the park. Any hidden message was weak, you have to be a little sadistic to enjoy this, and even then, it's just pretty messed up.

This was well acted but a terribly boring movie. It was not suspenseful most of the time. The only part was when the boy is trying to hide. The rewinding was ridiculous and stupid. Very unrealistic.

I find it rather amusing how many negative reviews this film has gotten - based on the point of the movie. People have been saying that it is too sadomasochistic and despairing, and that the only point is apparently brutality. Well, the movie is poking fun at exactly that. Not only that Americans enjoy brutality and gore [which this movie generally denies, on-screen anyway] but that they expect a happy ending. That is also why the movie breaks the fourth wall, and Paul rewinds the scenario when Ann gains an upper hand, destroying all hope that she might come out on top. It also features soft-spoken sociopathic killers, far different from the typical American antagonist.

Not as advertised. The cover and credits say Naomi Watts but this is the original version.

No redemptive qualities.
Apparently, there is a message here. Perhaps, then it should have been a documentary, not a sick, pointless drama.

9/10Amazing
A rare case of the remake being better than the original. This film is beautifully shot and visually stunning; it has a stripped, solid color aesthetic that can overwhelm you. The main reason this version tops the Austrian original for me is the casting of Michael Pitt as the lead villain. It seems like he was born to play this role. He projects the unfeeling yet polite evil of his character as well as anyone could. Tim Roth also gives a subdued but very effective turn as the emasculated, bourgeois husband. And of course, the story and technique remain the same as in the original, which is to say that you will find your body tensed up and your eyes won't be able to look away throughout the film. Warning: not for the faint of heart.

There is something very wrong about this movie. It doesn't belong in the world of cinema, because it provides no moral lesson, cathartic release, or emotional balance to the viewer. It provides only tension, frustration, confusion, and disgust at the terrible acts carried out. It is more like a snuff film.
The acting is very good, however some scenes are drawn out to the point of impatient boredom. I fast-forwarded through some scenes where you're watching someone sit on the carpet for 5 minutes.
I usually like disturbingly shocking movies... but I realize now that without some kind of cathartic release at the end of the story, I cannot approve.

I can understand how some would come in to this movie and think it trash, but if you're the right kind of film watcher this film will blow you away.

I gave this movie 2 stars just because of Tim Roth. He's one of my favorite actors.
This is a spoiler by the way.
I liked this movie up until they kill the first person in there family. For one reason or another the killers then leave and say they will be back later.
For a movie that doesn't want to fall into cliche's it does it by doing that. Okay so I forgive the movie for this but what bothered me was this is where the movie should have got good. Instead Naomi Watts leaves the house to try and find help. Realistically she would have been able to get help. Hell she was banging on the doors of people homes, chased down several cars but instead the killers find her and take her back home.
I found this movie was un-nerving without showing any gore. BUT this felt like the movie was trying to be preachy with it's message which I understood but it was trying to have it both ways of being a snuff film "which I don't care for to much" and a movie with a "Commentary" which I didn't care for.
At the end of the movie the two killers end up talking about the fiction vs. non fiction hero vs. reality. By this time I just rolled my eyes and almost shut off the film.
I don't mind the way the movie ended I mind how they did it.
Oh and also if you really love your child you would fight tooth and nail to protect your child you wouldn't sit as often as these parents do.
REWIND.... you'll understand what I mean by this if you watch this movie.
