The first half is amazing, I think the second is almost a completely different (and not as good) film.

When I first saw this movie, it was after seeing Platoon, which I thought was a gripping tale of Vietnam, Then I saw Full Metal Jacket. Having already been an unknowing fan of Kuberick's earlier works (The Shining, Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey) I was still unaware of the true power that his image of Vietnam was going to bring. A few critics have claimed that this movie is really two movies. The first being about Marine boot camp at Paris Island and the other half strictly about experience in the Vietnam War. Although on the surface this appears to be true, there is a true connection between the beginning and the end of the film that makes it whole. It's more then just about Pyle and Joker, it's about the loss of innocence and what we as humans put each other through in order to wage war.

Superb yet disgusting
Lol, I watched this movie the night before I went into the army. Yeah, I was having nightmares and in the end gave up on trying to sleep.

Superb yet disgusting
Lol, I watched this movie the night before I went into the army. Yeah, I was having nightmares and in the end gave up on trying to sleep.
FMJ is a darker than dark view of the US Marines as being a life of torture and death. It is a superbly casted and shot story, and will leave you breathless and shivering.
A must see, but don't take the kiddies, ok? It's not appropriate for them, or anyone under that age of 40 for that matter ;)

Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now and Platoon could be considered 5 masterpieces about the Vietnam War. Well, that's not completely true. The Deer Hunter is a postwar movie and so is Taxi Driver. Apocalypse Now is more about the concept of evil. So that leaves us with Full Metal Jacket and Platoon - the two Vietnam War masterpieces. Between them Full Metal Jacket is the better one in my opinion. Not a lot better but a little better - making it the greatest film about one of the most important events in American history.
