How far will you go to support your family? How will you handle yourself and treat those around you in the face of desperation?
Frozen River is a very powerful film that tackles these questions. Ray Eddy works at a local discount store trying to support her children. Her gambling husband has taken off just before Christmas leaving her alone to provide for the kids in a mobile home that needs replacing. She is unable to gain more hours at the store and upon meeting Lila she turns to smuggling illegal aliens into the United States. Lila Littlewolf is a Mohawk living on an Indian reservation that straddles the US/Canada border. The two must journey back and forth across a frozen river taking many risks along the way. Tragedy strikes and the two risk it all.

Frozen River could have been a timeless classic. It had such great potential with a story about the decisions we make in desperate times.
But it's ending was too preposterous. I won't ruin it, but I will say I didn't believe it, and it took away from the previous 85 minutes, which were splendid.......Frozen River excels at making the audience sympathize with Ray. Many of us are facing economic hardships, and we wonder if we would go to the same lengths to get out of debt. Ray is lost and on edge. She's not a bad person, but her current situation forces her into things she wouldn't have otherwise considered....As I watched this movie, I kept thinking about how many people are like this in Massena, now. How many families are struggling with piling bills, food and daily necessities. I wondered how many have thought about, or started doing illegal things to survive.
Frozen River is an honest look at people and what we all do in dire situations. The performances are emotional and powerful. Melissa Leo is phenomenal as the desperate mother who only wants her family to be happy. The burden weighs on her and the stress shows in her face and her eyes. She creates a character who is not just a character in a movie, but your next door neighbor and the person in line at the grocery store. We can connect with her and feel for her.

I have a huge soft spot for Melissa Leo. She blew into Pine Valley (All My Children) 20-some years back and ripped up the lives of its residents and ate the scenery for dessert.
Since then she has become a really terrific actress. In fact, she should have won the Oscar lat year for just the first two minutes of the movie. However, the rest of the ride will test your nerves.
This is one of those movies where a good person in a desperate situation does stupid things to extricate themselves. Combined with my own rampant neuroses, it was not a comfortable two hours. If you think you can stand it, stick with. It's got a great dark and cold feeling to it and the story is pretty good.
But it's Leo and her co-stars Misty Upham and Charlie McDermott that make this worth your time.

Ray (Melissa Leo) leads a rough life which becomes a lot worse when her husband takes off with all the family's money right before Christmas. Needing to come up with a large amount of cash so she can get the trailer she needs for her family she finds out she can help a Mohawk woman smuggle Chinese workers into the US. Frozen River is a compelling movie that does a tremendous job of showing what people are willing to do for their families. The Mohawks and the whites in the movie aren't able to trust each other & no one thinks too highly of the people they smuggle over the border. Courtney Hunt does a great job considering this is her directorial & writing debut and Melissa Leo's performance (the first time I've seen her in a leading role)is superb. (2/18/9)

A bit forced
A woman in a rural upstate New York town struggling to raise two kids begins smuggling illegal immigrants across the Canadian boarder when she meets a widowed tribe member. This is an interesting look at the struggles of the poor in rural areas, but doesn't quite go as far as could have. I never bought the performance of Melissa Leo as the struggling mother. She always seemed forced and unnatural, seeming to want to take the character to a new level but never getting there. It felt as though this film wanted to be bigger, and more profound than it ended up being, leaving the entire film a bit strained.
