This movie was awful. It wasn't the very emotional material of race relations or of police violence or of missing children. Not even the idea of a parent who might kill their own child. No. It was awful, because: 1. It failed to keep a cohesive story line. 2. It failed to give us sympathetic characters in most cases. Edie Falco and Samuel L. rocked it, but they did not have much to work with.
The writing was awful, and I think the director must have been drunk or on speed, because I did not see a clear vision for this film. None. The movie made sense, but the problem is it did not give proper respect to any of its multiple storylines or subplots. I would have liked to have seen more back story to Counsel's relationship with his son and his son's trouble or to Brenda's relationship with the people with whom she worked.
Horrible movie. I only gave it an extra star because of Samuel L. Jackson!

This movie is a darn shame--and a darn mess. What an interesting premise and an interesting cast, but the follow-through is non-existent. Julianne Moore essentially plays the pharmacy scene from 'Magnolia' for the ENTIRE MOVIE, which is more than a little off-putting. Sam Jackson's character has problems and mixed allegiances that we don't ever understand (nor are we given any reason to want to). The plot is a simple one that becomes inexplicably convoluted; riots, race issues, cops hating on cops...hey, where IS that missing kid? Blah. Darn shame, darn shame.

The movie doesn't try to give the audience a big dramatic twist/shock conclusion. It races for the first half setting up great tension, and then the pieces simply slide painfully into their inevitable conclusion. I think that is what turns-off most people, who have come to expect a big pay-off/elaborate conspiracies and plots in their popcorn thrillers. Instead we're treated to something different and more realistic. Julianne Moore did well with a character that's meant to both frustrate and evoke sympathy. The writers/director deserve credit for an evocative story that keeps from being cheap and sensational.
