Half way through this movie I wish the japanese had shot me! This movie is so mind-numbingly boring that even death would be a welcomed substitute.

Flags of Our Fathers is a good, solid film made by a pro. Its about the famous flag-raising at Iwo Jima in WWII and Director Clint Eastwood is very good at showing us the ambiguities and conflicts between the real event/battle and the re-staged event/p.r. circus. Hes especially good at showing us the conflict through image -- for example, the fireworks exploding as the flag-raisers mount a papier mache mountain to recreate the event in a stadium on a fund-raising tour turn into real explosives as Eastwood flashes us back to the beach at Iwo Jima. But we see this trope five or six times and grow a little tired of it. Moreover, it serves to remind that, despite good acting, we never really get to know the characters at all. In fact, I had trouble telling most of them apart. The film, taken from life, also lacks a satisfying climax. Id still recommend it, however.

Director Clint Eastwood did an amazing job with this one. in these two films (the other one is "Letters from Iwo Jima"), he keeps the audience contemplating World War 2, and war in general. It also contains strong commentary on the way the media depicts war heroes and soldiers, and turns pictures into symbols and icons. The movie is quite slow-going at first, but later it really becomes interesting. recommended for a movie night with the guys.
