Let's talk about endings here for a moment (don't worry there's no spoilers here) - every minute of a film is building toward an ending, but so often films mess up all the great story they've built up in the last few minutes.
That's why I want to draw your attention to 'Field of Dreams'. I'm sure by now we're all familiar with the premise - an Iowa farmer hears a disembodied voice that says, "If you build it he will come", which in turn leads him to plow under his cornfield to build a full baseball diamond.
Many people have talked about the themes explored by this movie (and there are many - family, redemption, pursuit of dreams, etc.), or the very believable characters. All of that is great.
But what I especially appreciated about this film was the ending. Everything builds up to it, and like so many things in the film, it ends on a perfect, serene note. It would have been so easy to tack on an extra scene or two; so tempting to tie everything up with a nice bow; belabor the point; but one single shot sums everything up and fades to credits.
A crash lesson in endings done right.

I guess if you really really love baseball, this is the movie for you. To me, I don't even notice the baseball. This is the worst Iowa movie ever made (and I'm considering the original State Fair when I make that assessment). Two unforgivable features of this movie: (1) the notion that anybody who leaves small-town Iowa to attend UC Berkeley ever goes back to small-town Iowa unless it's to care for a sick relative. (2) The unintentionally funny moment when Ray Liotta walks out of the cornfield and says "Is this Heaven?" Iowa's pretty and all, but you go stand in a cornfield in the middle of summer sometime when the corn and the humidity are high and see if you could possibly mistake it for heaven. More likely you'll mistake it for the other place. (What's the best Iowa movie ever made? Curiously, it's "Terms of Endearment.")

I just read another member review on here, someone that gave it a 1. They gave it a 1 because they're not into baseball and it wasn't accurate to Iowa. Come on, did you even watch the movie? This movie is about all those things you wished you could go back and do differently, those regrets you had with your family, missed opportunities and about ignoring those things in life you enjoy because you focus on other things. The movie feels good, makes you feel good, and if you like it, you'll watch it again. The vehicle to deliver that message is a man who build a field in his corn, and each step leads to another person and another step.
